Fown.s Plttitl:v n¥ ItIItrNINUt.--A curious in
stane .f the ellects produced by the electric
tluid oellnrred a week or two since to two girls m
who were on tih'ir way to the market at Breasuire,
with a bhallet ot live fowls along from their respec
tive shoulder.. They went chatting along, when
a few great drops of rain, which came pattering
down, warned them that a storm was at hand. at
There happened to be an enormous rock near,
which projected over the road, and beneath this te
they took refuge. Presently, without previous
warning, they were half stuned by a lond report,
and siaiultaiously with the report they saw a hall
of fire fail into the road a few paces from where
they were standing. The only effect that it pro
duced on themt was as though they had been vio
lently shaken. As soon as the storm had passed ul
over they eootiniead their journey, not a little agi
tated by wllat they had seen and felt. It was not
until they reached the market that they became
aware of the exceedingly narrow escape they had
had. i)n their baskets being lifted from their
shoulders, they found that the whole of their
fowls had been stripped of their feathers in the
cleanest possible manner.

EI'nom.eNt Dtpirourars.--The three diplomat
ists who jllst now excite the greatest curiosity and
interest oin Parts are the Prince de Metteriich, em
bassa.or of Austria; tile Count de Goitz, embas
mador of l'russia, and the tchevalier Nigra, embas
aador of Italy. The Count de Goltz, much the
elder of the trio, is a bachelor on the other side of
60. Ite is the ideal of what is termed the gentle
man of the old school, tall in person, scrupulously
neat it his dress, of dignified iearing, and with the
polished manters of one whe han passed his life ta
the atmosphere of courts. The Prince de Metter
nich is tall and slender, with a broad forehead and
intelligent face, wears long, flowi.,g side whiskers
of a light shade peculiar to the Germans, a mous
tache of the same hue, and keeps his chin closely
ahavedl. He is about 33 years of age. The third
diplomatist of the trio is the Chevalier tltgra, who
is also from 30 to 35 years of age. Moulded under
the immediate eye of tile indelatigahle Cavour, he
is a hard worker. Like the Prince de Ietternich,
Mi. Nigra belongs to the new school of young di
plomacy, which repudiates airs of affected solemn
ity and official stiffhess, and the attitude of (Edi
pus before the Sphinx. His manners are those of
a man of the world, and even of a man of elegant
leisure.
'Mr. Swipes, I've just kicked your son Willism
u.t of my store." "Well, Mr. Bwiogle, it's the
first bill you've footed this many a day."
The Yankees are inventing " a machine to hull
gottou-atalhs." Betterr aisoe the cotton first.
