True to ilis Colors,
the 5tontgomery Mll.]
At the late battle of Sadowa the advancing
asians came upaon a ditch ball filled with dead
d wounded Austrians. Amongi thenm was a
. ag officer lying upon his hack, mortally
unded. Filled with compassion the victors
ted to move him ad have a seurgeon attend to
f wounds, bat hlie Ibegged them to let him lie
ere he was, as he felt quite cool and comfort
le. Ito a short tilne he died. tUpon removing
body they foltd, folded beeath hit , the " i

daid him to.rest.]
Sadowa's fatal field was fought;
Onward the Prussians poured
Exultant-for througlh the day,
Though fierce had been the direful fray,
Their flag triumphant soared.
Wild shouts of victory rang out
From lips with battle stirred;
And many a face grew dark with ain,
And many a [email protected] wound throbbed again,
When those wild shouts were heard.
The conquering legions paused upon
The field so lately wou
And where the Austrian thousands stood,
The dead and dying bathed in blood,
Lay stretched beneath the sun.
And there among those dying men,
Uttering no geani or cry,
Was one, who through the fatal strife,
As though he bore a charmed life,
lHad waved his colors high.
But stricken now. and pale, lihe lay,
Ilts broken flag-stafl' ear,
Forsaken, lone, life leetinig fast,
The loud, triumtihant bugle blast
Of Prussia in his ear.
No mother ever kissed a cheek
iMore manly or more fair ;
His fading eyes tie gently closed,
A smile upon his lips reposed,
Those lips were mloved in prayer.
to beautif!l, so brave. o, young,
Th'ce on the tiald lie hay.
His victors strive to ,tau:slh his wound ;
They strive to lilft him from the ground,
lie waves them all away.
" Leave me," he cried, "I ask no aid,
Death's damp is oil imy brow,
Here on the green earthl let ise lie,
Here in the sunset shadows die,
Oh! I am happy now."
And so death came-and gathering round,
With maily, tender care,
They raise hiid from his gory bed;
AnId lifting itup hli ysouttfui head,
They smoothed his clotted hair.
And there, beneath him folded lay,
All bloody, smoked and torn
The remnant of that banner bright
That through thickest of the fight
His hand had nobly borne
Those stalwart men brushed tender tears
From eyes unused to weep,
They wrapped the flag alout his breast,
And softly left him to his riest
In glory's sweetest sleep !
