THE WILLIAHS NEWS The Arizona Mines Go Down and Improve WitH DeptH It lias been the impression among eastern capitalists and a great .many mining men, or men that were supposed to be such, that while there were a great many prospects in Arizona that showed up well on the surface, they would not hold out well at a greater depth. What created this impres sion is something that mining men, who know to the contrary, can not solve, for there is absolutely noth ing to back up the statement that Arizona mines are soon "worked out," while to substantiate" the statement that Arizona mines im prove with depth, we only have to point to every mine, in the ter ritory. The Congress mine, while a very good prospect on the surface, at a depth of 150 feet was - pronounced worthless by men claiming to be experts, and was spoken of as an "'Arizona wildcat" mine, but today at a depth of 3,200 feet it is con sidered a "bonanza," and was sold for 15,000,000, the ore being far better than at the surface and the veins and ore shoots improving right along. The world-famous United Verde was a good prospect, but ex-Governor Trittle spent a for tune in trying to prove it was a mine and would go down, and was unable to persuade eastern capital ists that Arizona mines, like a ma jority of the mines in the world, improved with depth. - Senator Clark was sure that it was a mine and developed it to such an extent that he refused $100,000,000 for it. The La Fortuna was thought to be a good property, but at a depth of 150 feet was not considered to be worth 100,000, while at a depth of KX) feet was considered to be worth 2,000,000, and is one of the big dividend-paying mines of Arizona. The King of Arizona only brought $30,000 at a depth of 100 feet, while at a depth of 500 feet it brought $1,000,000. The Crowned King mine was considered a failure at a depth of 165 feet, while its value at 400 feet was $1,000,000. In the great copper district at Globe there is not a mine that has not larger andVicher bodies of ore at depths of 500 to 1,000 feet than when nearer the surface. At Clifton and at the great Bisbee mines the same thing is found to be true without an exception, that they all improve with depth. The great Octave mine did not have a very great showing on the surface, but D. J. Jones succeeded in getting capital ists to take hold of it and develop it, and more than $500,000 was spent in development work before any returns were received, and to day, with the ore bodies getting larger and the ore values higher, it is worth several millions. When Arizona had no mine development sufficiently to support the statement that her mines improved with depth, capitalists were suspicious of anything that had the word Ari zona attached to it, but now, when we have some of the best paying mines in the world to back up oar assertions, they are becoming aware that in Arizona mines they have some of the safest and best investments . that can be made. Mining is no longer looked upon as a gamble by our most conserva tive men, and the mining industry is no longer denounced as "spec lative," but business men, banks, and the public in general, are be ginning to realize the importance the mining industry lias to our national welfare and advancement. The city fathers tested the chem ical engine on the plaza last Wed nesday night to see that everything is in 6hip-shape for an emergency. For its size, the engine is all that can be expected, and the rapidity with which the flames in the heap of combustibles were extinguished after the fire was under fierce head way, was a revelation to the spec tators. An order has been placed with the Williams Drug Co. for a large quantity of chemicals to be kept on hand, and the engine, after a com plete overhauling by Marshal Ken nedy, will be in readiness for in stant use in case of necessity. Geo. U. Young, of Williams, who has abandoned the journalistic quill for the mining pick, is again in Prescott, to look after his interests in the hills near this city. He feels very enthusiastic over the future of the mining industry, and incident ally says that Prescott has a pros perous outlook ahead, all due to the mining back bone of the adjac ent country.
