The salary of 12,000 a year paid the collector of customs at Xogales appears not to be large enough. Better raise it a little. Dr. Geo. W. Vickers is now at the helm of Arizona's leading daily, the Arizona Republican. Col. S. M. McCowan, who has been man aging editor for the past year, is an excellent writer and has placed the Republican on its present high plane. Today the grade on the Santa Fe and Grand Canyon railroad will be completed to the canyon. The work of laying the steel is pro gressing rapidly and but about two miles yet remain to be covered. At present, the stages meet the train ix miles from the canyon, but this will be reduced as the liallasting progresses. Because of lack of space last week, mention regarding the open ing of the new smelter of the Val Verde Copper Co. was omitted. Thisenterprize is one that has long leen needed in this section of Ari zona and will enable many mines to yield profitably where before it was impossible. The company ex Iects to have' its smelter in opera tion about the first of October, and the date of the "blow-in" will mark a new era for the mines of northern and central Arizona. A perusal of their notice on page 7 will give some idea of the plans and equip ment of the company, which are of a niW't extensive nature. We are glad to see that the Santa Fe railway system has officially adopted the American way of spell ing the word " canj'on." Formerly the company 8elled it in the Span ish way, with an accented "n,' which has the sound of "ny," but so many American papers, nowa days, have no foreign letters, that when the word was copied by them it appeared as "canon," which is neither Spanish nor English. The publication of the United States geological survey and the works of all the best authorities have, for some time past, used the "y," and the adoption of this style by the great railway system of the south west will do much to banish the mongrel "canon." The tendency of the time is to drop all super flu ous letters, but in this case the "y" is not superfluous, because the word cannot be properly pro nounced without it. Journal Democrat. "The Santa Fe will have its new line of road to the Grand Canyon of the Colorado in Arizona com pleted and open for trafic on Sept. 25. The line to the Grand Canyon is only about ten miles long, but it enables passengers to ride in cars to the very brink of what is prob ably the most marvelous canyon in the world." Journal-Democrat. ' The gentleman who penned the above paragraph knew (?) all about the canyon and the railroad when he wrote those few lines. It is strange that a newspaper with the standing of the Journal-Democrat should employ such well-jo8ted (?) men. "Only ten miles" to the very brink of what is probably the most marvelous canyon in the world." Strange that so much time and money have been con sumed in building ten miles of track. The Journal-Democrat had better send that man out here, so he may gather a few facts before pub lishing such statements to the gen eral public. Ejecting Settlers. Forty-three ranchers and all the residents of Fairbank. in the San Pedro valley, have been notified to leave their homes, which are on the Boquillas Spanish land grant. The grant came into the possession of a large cattle company recently and will be fenced in as soon as the set tlers are ejected. One rancher has built a fort and proposes to stand off the company's cowboys who will be engaged in clearing the land of the ranchers and their improvements. The grant embraces 17,355 acres.
