Mr. and Mrs. M.Salzman return ed to the city from California this rooming. Miss Ruth Ilayward left this week for Los Angeles where f he will attend school the coming winter. Jas. Perkins will leave tonight for a day's visit with his sister, Mrs. John Flick, now at the cinder pit. Dan McDonald, who has been lown with mountain fever for the Kt two weeks, was around town yesterday for the first time. Martin Buggeln has purchased J. W. Thurher's interest in the stage line, trail stock, etc., at the Bright Angel hotel, and is now sole owner. Though the erection of a Harvey House is a question of only a few months, the stage and trail stock will be kept up for the lenefit f travelers along the brink of the -hasm. Mrs. M. J. Kennedy and family, who have been spending the week in the city, will return to their home in Flagstaff this evening. On next Wednesday she will leave for a two-weeks' visit with her parents in Newcastle, Ind. M. J. exiects to accompany his wife and family as far as Albuquerque, if hi? busi ness will allow him. A peculiar accident occurred near the Bright Angel hotel Wed nesday. While the graders were at work clearing the right-of-way, a large blast that had been placed under a mammoth stump, shot the stump into the air until it was a mere speck in the sky. It descend ed into an unoccupied tent near the hotel, completely demolishing it. It then bounded across the street, tearing up another tent. Fortu nately, no one was hurt. PRESIDENT ASSASSINATED The most horrible tragedy since the assassination of President James A. Garfield occurred yesterday at Buffalo, X. Y., in the assassination of President McKinley by a Polish anarchist or crank. - The assassin fired two shots, both taking effect in the stomach of the President. As soon as .the shots were fired the President Iwwed to a detective and then walked quietly to a chair and sat down with no ap parent show of pain. The assasin fieri, but was soon captured. He gives his name as Fred Neiman,2S years of age and a Pole by descent. He is 5 feet, 9 inches, weighs lfiO ll., hair brown, eyes blue, smooth face, regular fea fures, prominent nose. He claims Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit as his home. The latest news states that the prosjiects for the President's recov ery are good. For Sale or Lkase. The announcement has been re cently made that a magnificent six page colored comic supplement will be added to the Los Angeles Sun day Herald. It is promised that this will be the finest colored sup plement ever published by any newspaper in the west. The first one will appear about October 1. The Sunday Herald has leen mak ing some pretty rapid strides lately. Its Sunday magazine is far ahead of any Sunday magazine on the coast, and is constantly being im proved and presenting new and at tractive features. Council Proceeding. At town hall the common council of the town of Williams met on the 27th day of August, at 8 p. m., pur suant to adjournment. Present, B. F. Sweetwood, Geo. Wharton, and the mayor. Absent, Jos. Johnston, F. R. Nellis. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The first business in order was the report of the special committee, as follows: Williams, Ariz., Aug. 27, 1901. To the Mayor and Common Council of the town of Williams: The undersigned, a special com mittee, appointed for the considera tion of the bids of Dr. P. A. Melick, Dr. A. Tyroler and Dr. A. G. Roun seville, to fulfill the position of town health officer, beg to report and recommend as follows: The above mentioned bids have received due attention, and we recommend the acceptance of the proposition of Dr. A. Tyroler, and recommend his appointment. Yours truly, Harry Pyle, Jos. Johnston, Geo. G. Wharton, Special Committee. Whereupon Dr. A. Tyroler was appointed town health officer by the mayor. Same was approved by the council on motion of Mr. Wharton, seconded by Mr. Sweet wood. On consent of council Mr. Whit tlesy made a short talk on econom ical building. Mr. Ashurst also addressed the council on behalf of Poison Bros., in reference to side walk grade in front of their store. Mr. Sweetwood asked for leave of alwe; same was granted for twenty days, lieginning the 20th day of August. Meeting adjourned until Satur day, August 31, at 1 p. m. Council met on Saturday, August 31, at 1 p. m., pursuant to adjourn ment. Present, Jos. Johnston, Geo. Wharton and the mayor. Absent, F. R. Nellis and B. F. Sweetwood. A proosed ordinance was read, entitled "An Ordinance to Regulate Obstructions on the Sidewalks of the Town of Williams, and to Pun ish for a Violation Thereof." On motion of Mr. Johnston, seconded by Mr. Wharton, the same was adopted, to be known as ordinance No. 16. Another proposed ordinance was also read, entitled "An Ordinance to Amend sub-Divisions 8, 19 and 30, of Section 1, of Ordinance No. 8, Entitled 'An Ordinance to Im pose a License Tax on All Persons, Firms and Corporations, Engaged in Any Business, Calling or Occu pation Named in This Ordinance, and to Provide for the Collection Thereof.' " Same was adopted on motion of Mr. Wharton, seconded by Mr. Johnston, to be known as ordinance No. 17. Whereupon the meeting was ad journed until Tuesday, September 3, at 8 p. m.
