The public school opened last Monday with a full attendance and the outlook for the coming year is the brightest. The teachers have all returned from their summer va cations and will devote their entire time to the advancement of the pupils. J. It. Ilinton is principal; L. E. Gifford has charge of the first grammar department; Miss Ethel Marine, second primary, and Miss Alice Mclntyre, first primary. Pete Shaffer and J. II. Com mack have completed the well in the rear of the English Kitchen to a depth of ninety-five feet. About forty feet from the surface a tunnel is be ing driven to connect with another cess-pool twenty feet distant of about the same depth. The work of sinking has been comparatively easy, as almost the entire distance has been through cinders. When the ninety-five foot mark was reached sinking had to be stopied liccause of the seepage of water, wliich, while not great, was enough to stop the work. This is certainly proof that there is water lielow the cinders and there is no reason to believe other than that a sufficient supply could le obtained at a greater depth. Letter LUt. On last Thursday morning Mr. E. Lamb had an experience at his home in this city which reminded him greatly of his boyhood days. Mr. Lamb first noticed that some thing was wrong about the place when his dog ran up to him whin ing and yelping. Investigation showed that a tribe of old-fashioned bumble-lees had taken un their abode under his domicile. Arming himself with a broom, a most dead ly weapon in the right hands, he proceeded to wage war on the in truders. While the battle progress ed his good wife watched the opera tions through a screen door and counted his oponents as they fell. When the fight was over, sixty-six bumble-bees, by actual count, lay dead on the scene and Mr. Lamb escaped without a scratch.
