Grand Canyon of Arizona
.A.r Opinion fay a Special
Writer. Lillian WHiting
Lillian Whiting, a special writer
for one of . the eastern papers, re
cently visited the Grand Canyon in
northern Arizona, and she admits
that she was surprised to find the
great wonder in Arizona. She ex
pected : to find it in Colorado be
cause -it is known as the Grand
Canyon of the Colorado. Writing
of the great wonder, she says:
"El Grande Canon de la Colo
rado' is a spectacle before which
ne stands with neither speech nor
language. He is caught up into
regions heretofore undreamed of and
the expression, in painting, photog
raphy, or word-picturing that can
even faintly suggest the scene was
never yet invented. Imagine com
ing to the rim of a Titanic chasm
more than a mile deep, eighteen
miles across and over two hundred
long, and looking down not in a
deep, dark gorge, however gigantic
but into a sea of color; looking
on what is, apparently, miles of
architecture temples, mosques, pil
lars, pinnacles, cathedrals so won
derful in structure that they are in
dividually named, and you gaze
upon the " Solomon's Temple," the
"Temple of Rishnu," "Shinumo
Altar," "Thor Hammer," "Pompe
Pillar" and "Three Castles" im
agine all these in a blaze of color
changing from moment to moment,
in their deep rose-red, pale-green,
saphire, blue, amethyst-gray and
deep-orange; or, again, all this ar
chitectural marvel in its vary play
of color swimming in a sea of pur
ple mist with . the white limestone
catching the sunlight and shining
like illuminated alabaster. . The
sculptured formation is infinite in
its variety; its play of color can
only suggest to one St. John's in
spired vision of the New Jerusalem
that came to him on the isle of
Patmos, and here, in this lonely
desert in Arizona, with the silence
of centuries around one as an at
mosphere, he wonders if this majes
tic panorama, so unearthly in its
splendor, is not also a vision.
All uooDd him Pmlroo lie.

hardly fail to become spirit-gifted
in the midst of the sublimity.
No more can be said. It is al
ways and forever the sublimes t
thing on earth. Under the sun
shine catching a thousand change
ful hues; under the moonlight
mysterious, unearthly in its strange
splendor, and it is the event of a
lifetime to visit it, this Grand Can
yon of the Colorado. Tucson Post.
A Narrow Escape.
On last Monday an accident oc
curred at the mill of the Saginaw
fc Manistee Lumber company by
which Wm. Souder, one of the em
ployes, nearly lost his life.
Mr. Souder has charge of the car
on which the logs are loaded and
raised into the mill preparatory to
sawing. At the time of the acci
dent the crew was obtaining logs
of a certain length at quite a dis
tance from the mill. The car was
lowered down the incline to the full
length of the chain, by which it is
hoisted, and after being uncoupled
was pushed to the desired spot.
An understanding to this effect
was had between Souder and the
man in charge of the hoisting ap
paratus. This man was called
away for a few moments and an
other workman took hold of the
lever and lowered the car. After
it had reached the bottom of the
incline Mr. Souder stepped before
the car intending to loosen the
chain. The man at the lever, think
ing it had gone too far, reversed
the power and started the car for
ward. Souder was kneeling down
between the rails at this time and
it was impossible for him to escape
He was thrown upon his back and
his knees forced up till he was
bent double by the great weight of
the car upon him. How he escaped
instant death is miraculous. Will
ing hands quickly undertook the
task of rescuing him from his
cramped and awful position while
medical assistance was quickly
summoned. He was removed to
the hospital and an examination
showed that while no bones were
broken he had received internal in
juries of a very grave nature.
Wm. Souder, or "Black Bill," as
he is familiarly called, has many
friends in the city and all are
greatly grieved to hear of this sad
accident and hope nothing serious
will develop.
