The judge is looking up the reason why so many children do not attend school. According to the last school census there were IKS children in this district of school age and at present the aver age attendance is hardly 100 pupils. There is something radi cally wrong somewhere and this move by Mr. Layton will undoubt edly develop some good results. Arizona has very few residents who are not able to send their children to school, while the great majority are far more able to do so than the people of some of the eastern states. Possibly the fact that money can be made more eas ily here has something to do with this non-attendance, but what is money compared with even the commonest school education? Send your children to school, there is plenty of time for them to gather in the sheckles later on. The show at the rink last Satur day night, aside from the views bhown by the kinetoscope, was one of the "punkest of the punk." How some people get the idea that they have talent in the theatrical line is a mystery. Manager Silver nail, as well as the good people of the town, was imposed upon and it is needless to say that the next troupe of the Burton fc Baker var iety that stops over will receive a cold reception. The new buildings belonging to Poison Bros, and Jas. Walsh are being rapidly completed and though work on them was begun fully a month after some of the others, at present it appears as if they would be ready for occupancy first. Superintendent's Notice. From monthly reports coming from the different school districts, it appears that about 45 per cent of the children enumerated in the last school census reports, for some reason, are not taking advantage of trying to get a public school education. This is not as it should be. Par ents are standing in their own light when they neglect this important matter, when education is so cheap and the facilities so much better than when some of the older gener ations had to walk from two to four miles every day and sit on the flat side of a rail in the "Old Log School House" and many of those same people who labored under those disadvantages are now among the brightest people of the times. A little sacrifice on the part of parents, while their children are of school age, will not be regretted in after years. There is a compulsory school law on the statute books which will be put into operation in the near fu ture, if it is found to be necessary. This law does not apply to parents who absolutely need the services of their children to help sustain the family, or who through sickness or poverty are unable to send their boys and girls to school, but it does apply to those who are able and re fuse or neglect the opportunity. This does not apply to any one dis trict, but all, alike. N. G. Layton, County Superintendent. The El Paso..
