Have you noticed the generous
advertising patronage the News is
receiving at present? Our sub
scription list is increasing also, and
today the News has a larger circu
lation than ever before. Following
out our idea that what the people
want is a good home paper, we are
striving to this end. That our
efforts are being appreciated is
shown by the number of new sub
scriptions we have received. That
the paper is leingread is shown by
the fact that our advertising pat
ronage is on the increase. We de
sire to increase the News to twelve
Iages thus giving much more read
ing matter, and with a little more
financial assistance in the way of
advertising we will le able to do
so, giving the people a a jr of
which they may well be proud.
Grand Canyon mining property
is changing hands frequently of
late. This week twelve asbestos
claims, situated . in the canyon and
owned by John I lance, C. II. Mc
Clure and the heirs of V. II.
Ashurst, deceased, were sold to
Susan V. Selfridge, of New York,
the consideration being something
over ten thousand dollars. This is
the second important sale to be
made in that section within the
past two months and shows con
clusively that capital has at last
taken an active interest in the de
velopment of this great mineral
region. These two mining sales
are only the commencement of a
prosperous era for this district and
we are glad to see such deals made
as they bring 'money here and
interest the outside world in our
great resources.
We are informed that the Val
Verde Copper company will com
mence shipping ore from its canyon
mines, to the smelter at Val Verde
the coming week. Mr. Wm. Smoot,
Jr., has secured the contract for
hauling the ore and loading same
on cars ready for shipment. This
is a contract of no mean propor
tions as there are three hundred
tons of ore on the dump.
Next Thursday is the . day the
the small boy looks forward to
most eagerly, always being in
readiness to celebrate that occas-
eion. Ihe good citizens had best
tie their gates and turn their dogs
loose if they want to avoid annoy
ance, as the boys are already mak
ing preparations for an active cam
paigh on Hallow-een.
Williams is now enjoying the
privileges and benefits of an incor
porated city to the fullest extent.
This week thirteen electric lights
were placed in position on as
many street corners throughout the
town, and it is needless to say they
are a decided improvement. Seven
more are to be put up within the
next few days.
What do you think of our new
sidewalks which are being laid this
week to replace those destroyed by
the fire? . This is a much-needed
improvement in Williams and as
the walks are very wide they help
to beautify the streets greatly.
From present indications in the
weather, winter will soon be here.
This week there were several
showers and the atmosphere cooled
very rapidly, until an overcoat was
needed.

A more prosperous outlook for
the future Williams never had
than now.
The statehood convention will be
held at Phoenix today.
Full of Timely Matter.
Probably one reason why the il
lustrated magazine issued by the
Los Angeles Herald every Sunday
is appreciated so much more by
the public than the magazines or
Sunday supplements issued by
other papers, is because of the
timeliness and reliability of its
articles. Every week it contains
several excellently written articles
of current interest, with the finest
half-tone pictures to illustrate
them.
