The Last Chance mine in the Grand Canyon is becoming a won der among ore producers. Hereto fore about sixty pack animals have been engaged in carrying ore to the surface and this week the number was doubled. From three to four carloads of copper ore, averaging from $50 to $80 per ton, will be shipped to the smelter at El Paso each week and the reader can eas ily figure the proceeds from this property. Messrs. Barbour and Page have Ijonded the Hance-Ashurst claim in the canyon, four miles west of the Last Chance, and will put a force of men at work developing it. Mr. Barbour returned last week from El Paso where he had been making arrangements for ore ship ments and left for the canyon Mon day evening. The prospects are looking exceedingly bright for this section just now. Mr. Geo. W. Kexxey, who con ducts the livery business in the Yosemite valley, was a visitor at the Grand Canyon this week: Dur ing his brief stay in town he was a pleasant caller at this office. He liad often heard of the great gorge, und the trip being suggested to him by Santa Fe officials, he availed himself of the opportunity to make the trip. He says they have had a very good tourist trade there this year, somewhere over 5,000 people liaving visited the valley, all of whom either had been or were go ing to the Grand Canyon. The season closes there about the first of November and no one visits the valley during the winter months. It is unlike the canyon in this' re spect as here we have an open season the year round. He feels that after he has visited the canyon he will be able to do much for this section by speaking a good word to the tourists. The Arizona papers, as a rule are just now full of life two col umns of "statehood," three columns of cow ads, and the rest of the whole shooting match liver pills and articles of incorporation. idette. . . Yes, and it's too bad. Even the Vidette has its share. There are a few exceptions, though, and the News leads the list, as not a medi cine local appears in its columns. Mr. E. J. Fuller, assistant sup erintendent of the railway mail service, was a visitor in the city last Monday. His business here was in connection with the depart ment's plans to do away with the middle man in the letting of con tracts for carrying mail on star routes; the idea being to advertise for bids, locally, thus giving home people the benefits.
