GOLD AND SILTrs--Quotations of Gold have almost constantly fluctuated dming the week end lng this evening, in accordance with the frequent and at times violent alterations of the New York market. The supply and demand have been of a restricted character throughout, however, and operations exhibited a marked falling off as com pared with those for several previous weeks. Pales of Silver have been mostly confined to drib lets at 14@2 points below gold rates for American halves and quarters, and 21@3 Ii ent. premtum on gold quotations for Mexican dollars. The prin cipal sale today were $25,000 Gold at 135.; $10 000. $14.000 and $29.000 at 135l, and $5000 at 1361. Sales of Silver have been but little better than nominal, and we now quote Gold 133!~j 135j, American Bilver coin at 1331@134), and Mexican dollars at 1:371l38. FORI(;N ExcHtino--The movement in Foreign bills has been of only moderate extent during the past week, and rates have varied from day to day under the influence of the frequent changes in the New York Gold and bill market. Offerings of Commercial Sterling and France have been fair throughout, but the demand has been generally Inactive and only sporadic at best. We annex the leading tracnsctions for the day, aafol lows. viz : £4000 bank Sterling at 147, £2000 do. at 1474. £5000 do. at 1451. £5000 .\1 commercial do. at 1464. 30,000f. bank Franc at 3 85f. and 50,000f. commercial do. at 3 .88. Offerings of Commercial Sight and b-hort Sight have been ample throughout, though at no time heavy, and rates have ruled steady at last week's figures till within a day or two past, when they exhibited a slightly upward tendency. The principal purchases by banks and hankers to-day were $27,000 New York sight at 9-It; l cent. discount, and $18 000 and $30,000 do. at ; cent. discount. I Fida Evsiagn Dec. t11. 186 RiVIewW oF Tne MARKErs.--The general trade of the city has exhibited some improvement during the past week. but it is still far short of public anticipation. Operations in the leading staple have been of a fair extent at irregular prices. Tobacco has been steady but Inactive. Sugar and Molasses have been in good supply and demand at lull quotations. The movement in Flour has been light, and prices were well maintained, owing to the limited character of the supply, which latter was, however, materially augmented by heavy arrivals last night. Corn, Hay, Bran and Oats have been scarce and in only moderate request, but prices were firm throughout, and rates of the latter show a slight advance, while Pork, Baco: aid Lard have ruled active at decidedly upward igores. Money continued abundant. Foreignu Exchange was dealt in to a fair extent, and IDo mestic Exchange has been generally quiet, with a tendency to higher lignres towards the close of the week. (oriow--At the close of our last weekly sumrn mary, Friday evening, the 4th inst., the market was dull and depreased, with a steady downward tendency of prices, and during the first half of the week now under review, the movement throngs. 1 out was uniformly adverse to the interests of hld era. In fact, prices had given way fully lc. P it , under discouraging advices from all Important outoside markets and unusual irregularity in Gold and Exchange. Late on Tuesday, however. a very favorable reaction commenced, which has cootinued almost uninterruptedly since up to near the close of business to day. Advices tram l.iv erpool and New York have been uniformly en couraging during the three past days. The ;Goid and Foreign Exchange markets have been for the most part firmer and steadier, and quotations of Cotton have not only recovered, but now ahor a satisfactory net advance on the operations for the whole week. The 1:20 telegram to-day has., how ever, brought the market to a stand still, but fur a better understanding of the general movement, we would invite attention to the subjoined ex tracts frem our daily reports, via: -abirday. 7J. 5.-Advices from Liverpool and New I ork to-day have indicated a still further de cline in the leading staple, while rates of foreign blls were firmly maintained throughiut in this city and quotationsof Gold exhib!ted avery Irnhee .d.,ms. tbe latter, doubtless tended I to uphold the price of Cotton here, andi wth a materially reduced offering supply most factors have been disposed to exact higher prices. The 2 demand has been of a very restricted character I from the opening to the close of buslinecs, how ever, and the total sales aggregated only 2,Oi) hales at slightly easier though nct quotably t lower figures than those of yesterday. Aloday. Dec. 7.-The teiegramsr of .Saturday eveniong having proved abortive, so far as t egarded political diiccutles at Paris, the movement in the leading staple to-day has been exclusively governed by demand and supply. Oflerings were at no time heavy, d and the inquiry was active throughout from I the openingr to the close of business. At the f .me time prices further gave way fully j-. i I,., r owing to continued depressing accouot from the 3 European and Northern markets. and to frequent 4 fluctuations in rates of (;old and Exchange. The total operations amounted to 6100 bates. Tuesday, De, . --To day operations were for g a time restricted, owing to the absence of ad rices from trans-Atlantic ports on accoount of a d storm at the East, and to the unfavorable tenor ji of accounts from Liverpool, whi-h subsequent'y i came to bhand ; but as the intelligence received P from New York indicated lncreased frmness in E be latter market, whdle rates of Gold and Foreign a Exchange tended steadily upward, an Improved Semand, which was notlceable here before noon. i steadily increased as the day advanced.
