those who planted largely of cotton. Several frosts
have occurred in that section.
The Georgetown Watchman says that one of its
citizens realised $100 in coin for the rent of four
acres of land, being one-third of its product.
Twice that amount has been realised in this lo
cality, and nothing thought or said about it.
A correspondent of the Houston Times, writing
from Bryan, 7th last., says: " Cotton still pours
into Bryan in a steady stream. To-day the streets
will be thronged with cotton wagono, cold as it is.
But, unless ye send us some better news. the mar
ket is hlikely to remain fiat. The confidence of
sellers, however, it the speedy stiffening of the
market, is unabated, and I believe with them. Pe
cans are here from the Wichita, in large quantities.

of Gea. Wheeler's special scouts during the war,
and who was captured by his own side while they
were trying to make their way into Texas, at the
' break ap,' has just arrived here from Gaines
villp, Cook county. He informs us that the rain of

than the press has ever made known. He left his
farm and moved to the neigborhood of Gainesville,
and is a few days after the whole of his aeighbor
hood was ' oleaned up' by the Indiana. A short
time since, six white men bad a desperate anad
bloody battle with thirty or forty lndiuas. The
whites were led by two young mena named HBolbs,
who were desperate on aceount of their looses.
The lndians lst about seven killed, and a great
number were wounded. The whites hadone young
man killed and three wounded. Both the Holbs
had their horses shot under them. Geo. Hasleton
has now taken command of the frontier and pro.
mises to kill the last Indians if they rob and murder
any more. He asserts that he will make an ex
ample of the first Indian agent or antler who is
caught trading with the Iodians. as they know
that the nladian trade what is robbed from the
whites, and buying from them actually encourages

zctioN 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and
Hcuse of Representatives of the State of Louisi
ana in General Asseebly convened, That the
secretary of state be and he is hereby authorized
to appoint an assistant secretary of state and a
page to assist him in the discharge of his duties.
Sac. 2. Be it further enacted, etc.. That the
assistant secretary of state so appointed shal!, of
ter having taken and sobeoribed the oath required
by the Conatitution of this State, be fully author.
ieed to perform all or any of the duoties or oolial
acts required by law of the secretary of state dur
ing the sickness or absence for any cause of the
latter; and the secretary of state alone shall be
responsible for all acts so performed; said assa
tant shall also assist and aid is the performance of
such duties pertaining to the ofce as may be re
quired of him by the secretary of state and he
shall receive as payment Il full for srvices thus
rendered the sum of two thousand dollars per an
num, payable quarterly, on his own warrant, ap
proved by the secretary of state.
SBc. 3. Be it further enacted, etc.. That the sal.
ary of the page shall be ($40) forty dollars per
month, payable monthly to the same manner as
provided for the secretary.
8ac. 4. Be it flrther enacted, etc., That the
secretary of state shall not receive extra com
pensation for the copylag of the laws passed by
Sic. 5. Be it further enacted, etc.. That this
act shall take eltct from the first day July,
eighteen hundred and sixty eight, and all acts or
parts of acts Inconsistent with the provisions of
this act are hereby repealed.
