TOPEKA STATE JOURNAL, THURSDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 8, 1900. MILLS D GO J. o STATEMENT OP THE CAUCUS OP MANAGERS CONCERNING A GREAT EVENT NT MANA FRIDAY, NOV. 7th. Doors Open at 9:15 A. Al. MORB BARQAINS ON OPPOSITE PAOE. I trip DEPARTME ii 11 ILIL 4' 4 O THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR with the manner of conducting a Store like this, it should be explained that each Department, or 44 Stock," as it is called, Is a separate business, with separate accounts, and has its own success to make. If it doesn't pay, it will be sold out and discontinued. Still the heads of these Departments are under the control of the firm at almost every point, and sometimes have very different ideas of how to do things. The Mills Company has consented, for this month, at least, to allow each Department Head to conduct the Department under his charge as if he owned it. At the end of the Sale the firm will judge of the business ability of each one by the percentage of increased sales over the largest November Sales of any year previous. As the Department Managers have their own way to make, they are bound to increase the sales 4 rrp 1 1 4, in the most effective way that is, by giving Bargains such as no store in Topeka ever dared to do before. The whole Store will be decorated most attractively. Tin Q t eb 4 If! It can be done by giving the buying public extreme bargains, but that might prove disastrous to the profits. Yet we must sacrifice some, and in the present case I am enabled to give good bargains without too great a sacrifice, for two reasons: In the first place, al though the Silk Department was robbed of $2,000 worth of silks, we have been able to re place them at less price than we have ever bought the same qualities; and in the second place, my Black Wools are nearly all of this season's purchase; no old Crepons nor figured goods, but all fresh and new, The bargains will speak for themselves, and I trust that all who read this will visit the Department early in this November Sale."
