1 DUEL WITH HIS WIFE.
Man Shoots Woman In Eye and Is Shot
in Band.
New York, Oct, 7. Denton H. Hop
kins, a die cutter in Brooklyn shot and
killed his wife In a duel with her in
the hallway of her fiat in Johnson
street. Brooklyn, today. Although mar
ried 30 years the two were living apart,
having quarreled over money matters.
Today Hopkins called at his wife's flat,
knocked for admission and when the
door opened, they began to fire at each
other with revolvers. Hopkins' sister
witnessed the duel, but was unable to

wounded in the hand by a bullet from
his wife's weapon and finally shot her
In the eye. She died instantly. Ho
kins was aneeted and charged with

The wife's name was Jessie S. Hop
kins. Miss Jennie Bruyn, Mrs. Hopkins'
Bister, who witnessed the duel, said
that the conduct of the two indicated
that they had agreed to shoot each
other on sight. Hopkins afterwards
declared that his wife fired the first
hot. He said she was always nag
ffing him about money and that he had
refused" to give her as much as she de
man dad.
Miss Bruyn said Mrs. Hopkins had
appeared frantic about her husband's
conduct over money affairs.
Bobbins' Extravagant Wife.
"Have a cigar," said Bobbins.
"Don't care if I do," said Bobbins.
The two men were seated in their
luxuriously appointed club, and had
fallen Into that intimate and confiden
tial conversation in which men occa
ionally indulge.
;'You appear gloomy," Bobbins re
marked. ."Well. I don't mind telling you, old
man. that mj wife's extravagance
would be enough to make any man
have the dumps at times. I don't like
to say it. and I should dislike to ap
pear small"
"Tell me about it. old boy."
"Oh, it's pretty constant, but the
latest thing she wants is a new hat.
Of course. I want her to be a credit
to me. but as I suggested to her, she
had a new one only last spring. Wo
men are expensive luxuries."
"So some of my married friends tell
me."
"Yes, they have no conception of a
man's necessary expenses have a gin
fizz?"
"Don't cure if I do."
They had it.
"For instance, what do they know
about one's club expense? I only be
long to three clubs and you know
how essential it is to keep up on that
sort of thing and although the three
combined cost little more han my
family expenses, still they count, and a
woman can't understand it. It 1s a pity
they are so extravagant, for otherwise
they would be quite desirable."
"So some of my married friends
aay," said Bobbins. "It's too bad
about their extravagance. Have a
game of poker?"
"Don't care if I do." said Bobbins.
"Five dollar limit?"
But although Bobbins said so little,
it should be evident to everybody that
Ire must have been sorry for Bobbins.

after a smart run from this port was
reported some days ago, was lying off
the Mexican pearl port when the
steamship Curacao left there. The
Curacao arrived here Sunday night, too
late to pass quarantine. Frank (reen.
a passenger on the Curacao, was a
member of the Tornado' crew and he
brings home with him the recollection
of a lively half-hour on the schooner's
deck between all hands and a shark.
During a calm in the Gulf of Cali
fornia a big hook baited with pork and
attached to a heavy wire was thrown
over the side, an invitation to what
ever marine monsters might be In the
vicinity to try their strength. A shark
accepted the challenge. Swallowing
pork, hook and a few feet of wire was
easy. An attempt to cough up the
hardware served only to drive the hook

The Russian Peasant's Wase.
The Cossack who figures in Ernest
Poole's remarkable article, "Peasant
Cattle," In the October Everybody's,
treats the subject of peasant labor in
the foilowins brisk fashion:
"The dirty Russian peasants corns
over the steppe in the spring to do
your plowing and then again for the
harvest. He is very cheaji this peas
ant. Ail he needs is black bread to
eat while he works, and the lash to
keep him from going asleep, and then
when the work is over why the boot
Instead of the rule. So home he plods
like a stupid cow in the rain.
"Sometimes these cattle dare to go
to our Cossack judge and complain
when they get no pay. But our judge
is a sly old fellow. He just smiles and
asks them for the written contract. Of
course the peasant has none. 'Then.'
Bays the judge, 'perhaps in the verbal
contract he promised you only 16 lash
es and 20 kicks for the harvest work.
That's what he tells me, and I think
he's more honest than you are. So
Btop your growling and go 011 home!'
And if the peasant still stands on one
foot scowling and scratching his head,
then often the clerk jumps up and
crjes: "Oh. don't be so selfish! Give
him 50 kicks'' Then the peasant turns
and gallops like an old lame cow out
of the village."
Unfortunate.

track. The car I was in was shattered
very much, and it was necessary to
change cars. A noble looking English
lady with her husband was wailling
near me. She was scolding him well
for starting on their journey on Fri

'something would happen if we should
start on Friday.' Madam,' said I, 'do
you know that Columbus set sail to
discover America on Friday?' She
looked at me with indignation, and
said: 'Sir, in my opinion it is a great
pity that America was ever discovered
at all.' "
