THE TOPEKA DAILY STATE JOTJRNAIr SATURDAY EVENING. NOVEMBER H, 1908.
NO GINGER IS LEFT
Commercial CInb Lacks Ele
ment of Success.
A Few Old Members Make Obit
nary Kemarks
NEED OF NEW LIFE.
Reorganization Necessaiy to
Sare the Organization.
This May Be Done at an Early
Date.
Friday, the 13th day of November,
temperature below freezing, 13 mem
bers of the- Topeka Commercial club '
present at the regular monthly meet
ing when It was called to order by the
temporary chairman, and 23 members
present when adjournment was taken
an hour later. The combination of
hoodoos Is too much for any Institu
tion in the weakened condition of the
Topeka Commercial club to attempt
to withstand and last night the death
rattle began and the club will soon
be a thing of the past unless a strong
saline solution of some kind in the
thape of a reorganization is injected
into it.
This was the second of the series
of t winter meetings and less than a
corporal's guard of the three or four
hundred membership have attended
the two meetings. Probably no city
in the United States of the size of To
peka Is without a commercial organ
ization of some kind yet this city has
been in just that shape for over a
year and there seems to be no chance
of bettering the condition until a
complete reorganization of the Tope
ka Commercial club occurs.
C. K. Holliday acted as chairman
last night for It must be remembered
that the organization has been a
headless affair for nearly a year
which may In a measure account for
its uselessness. There was a time
when the Commercial club was a cred
it to the city and a body which ac
complished things for the betterment
of Topeka but that was so long ago
that the new members know of it on
ly by tradition.
Dry rot or something of that kind
commenced over a year ago and since
that time the organization has been
almost useless as far as Topeka is
concerned. Many members have been
dropped from the rolls because they
do not feel obligated to maintain an
Institution which is of no use to the
city or to any save the individuals
who draw salaries from Its treasury.
Dry rot Is a charitable name for the
trouble which has killed the useful
ness of the club, but the malady is in
curable and nothing short of a com
plete reorganization of the club will
again bring back its usefulness.
A little less than one year ago W.
F. Jensen was elected president of the
club and he immediately set a number
of socalled reforms in motion, but the
club was already on the down grade.
Then politics crept into the organiza
tion and a fight was started against the
railroads, but it failed to materialize.
The question of municipal lighting
came up a few weeks later and at a
packed meeting of the club it voted
almost unanimously to instruct the
city council against city ownership.
This move failed to produce the de
sired result, for a week or so later the
taxpayers of the city at an election
voted $70,000 in bonds to be used in
rebuilding the city lighting plant. Mr.
Jensen in the meantime had tendered
his resignation and later moved from
the city and since then the Topeka
Commercial club has been a headless
affair as helpless and useless as a
rudderless ship on a choppy sea.
The Topeka Commercial club is an
incorporated affair and any changes
which are to be made must be done
according to the laws of the state gov
erning such organizations. An at
tempt was made to reorganize the
body at a meeting a month ago and a
second attempt was made at the meet
ing last night and the condition of the
club today is just about what it has
been for months past. The business
men of Topeka acknowledge the ne
cessity of an organization of this kind
but many of them are refusing to con
tribute to the expenses of the present
organization on the plea that it is
worse than useless.
The obituary services which were
held last night consisted of reading
the minutes of meetings held during
the past nine months or such a mat
ter and which have been omitted
from time to time as useless, owing
to the fact that there has at no time
been more than a handful of members
of the club present during the past nine
months.
In the dim and distant past the To
peka Commercial club was the means
of securing many valuable enterprises
for the city, among them the Santa Fe
ehops and numerous factories of vari
ous degrees of worth though during the
past year absolutely nothing has been
done and but little attempted. Secre
tary Poole has a plan for the reorgani
zation of the club and the changing of
its name which he says has been ap
proved by T. F. Doran. The proposed
plan was submitted at the meeting last
night as well as at the previous meet
ing but.it does not seem to meet with
the approval of the majority of the
members of the club.
The. change contemplates paying the
members of the board of directors one
dollar each for every meeting they at
tend and it is hoped that this will
stimulate the attendance at the meet
ing of this board. An attemp't will
be made at the next meeting to change
the name of the club and adopt a new
constitution and bylaws, though the
majority of the members seem to feel
that the trouble is not with the con
stitution or bylaws of the club nor with
Its name but with the management.
"It appears to me that there is noth
ing else to do but bring about a com
plete reorganization of the club," said
Col. Carter at last night's meeting.
"Something should be done and that
at once," commented ex-Mayor Davis.
"Topeka needs a commercial organi
zation of some kind which will work
for the entire interests of the city,"
commented Charles Wolff, the packer.
"If there is any disgrace attached
to the old name I would be in favor
of changing it to most any thing
else," said D. R. Blaine, "but if not it
seems to me that the present name is
good enough for all purposes."
"I am in favor of any thing that
will bring about a new condition of
affairs," said C. K. Holliday. "Topeka
needs a Commercial club and needs it
badly and the city suffers every day
that it is without a body of men who
will abandon their own business for a
few hours and donate their service to
the Interests of the entire city."
"The old Commercial club organiza
tion has been the means of assisting
Topeka to obtain many things of
treat value to the city," said w. L.

TIMES SQUARE AUTOMOBILE CO.
M1LHIUAN AVE., CHICAGO.
1599 Broadway, New York City.
Here is the solution to the automobile
question. We are the only institution in
the world who can offer you a line of
New 1909 Automobiles. Made and sold
everywhere else at $2,500 our price $1,400.
Don't pass this up as- an advertising
scheme. It is an opportunity for you to
get nearly two dollars for one. Under
stand this is not a car made by us or a
car without name 'or- reputation. It Is the
popular and . well-known DOLSON car,
made at Charlotte,- Mich. We can show
you in black and white that this car costs
$1,600 to produce. The parts, engine,
transmission and extras are standard of
the world. We invite and solicit the
closest investigation. We can prove the
car to be equal, and in most cases, the
superior of any $3,000 car sold in the
United States. If you are in the market
for a car, do hot wait till they are all
gone. We have only a limited number
and we will never be able to duplicate the
purchase.
Come and see us at once; but, If you
cannot do so, send for catalogue and we
will take the matter up by mail. We can
take care of a few more orders for our
1908 Queen touring car and roadsters.
Here" is a $2,350 car that we can offer you
for $1,100 absolutely new and guaranteed.
If you want to consider a buggy automo
bile or high wheel, we have a line abso
lutely new 1908 cars which we will let you
have for $350 each. These are high-grade
machines and have been sold regularly
for the last two years and are selling to
day elsewhere at $600 each. If you are
considering a second-hand car, we will
show you an assortment and line of cars,
the equal of which cannot be shown by
all the automobile stores in Chicago put
together. We quote a few for compari
