Senator .Stone To Flay Roose velt in Political Speech. T. R. GOING TO WASHINGTON! His Presence Significant; Po litical Storm Brewing Fast. Fuel Order Continues To Draw Fire McAdoo To Testify. ' BY L. C. MARtIx. ' j Washington, Jan. 21. Spirited ' fights on the proposed "war" cabinet" bill and threatened discussion by Sena i tor Stone of "war and politics" dis- pelled any likelihood of heatless ses- sions in congress this Week! I The battle destined to swirl about I the war cabinet of three was to open today with introduction of Senator Chamberlain's bTU for creation of the body..,- - . Senator Stone's delayed - speech aimed at "playing 'politics" and Col onel Roosevelt's proposed., visit here promised to add fuel to the - fire. With President Wilson and Secretary of War Bfrtser opposed to the cabinet idea, to say nothing about a central ized war munitions purchase plan, there was doubt of congressional ability to put the ideas across. -- Democrats Disagree With Wilson. T Some Democrats are hopeful that President Wilson may be induced to change his views'and to agree to more of a non-partisan control of govern ment and more centralization on mu nitions. The whole question, however, appears to turn upon the wish of the man in the White House. Colonel Roosevelt's proposed pres ence in the city at this time is regarded as particularly significant. His open attacks against the administration make it practically certain that he will exercise the influence of his person ality in the forthcoming political storm. Senator Stone's speech will serve as a challenge to the .Republicans who have waited their chance to air their feelings about conduct of the war. They plan to discuss Secretary of "War Baker, Fuel Administrator Garfield and others while probably attacking the powers conferred on the adminis tration in matters of coal, food and railroads. Mixing Campaign Medicine. The Democrats propose to charge the Republicans with making cam paign material for the next elections. In addition' to heated discussion ex pected on the floor, fuel was slated to draw fire in committees McAdoo before the interstate Com merce committee was to be questioned as to just how he was connected with the Garfield order. Also, the commit tee wants to-know whether this fourth day of the suspension period has shown improved conditions . on the railroads. To prevent "crossing of wires" by committee members, they have agreed to let each member pursue his line of questioning to a conclusion before in terruptions side track the matter in hand. Each member, under this plan, was expected to "have an inning." Senator Watson. Indiana, Will try to get to the bottom of the origin of the order. . Senator Kellogs, Minne sota, will interest himself with rail road financing. Senators Pomerene, Robertson, Smith and Underwood will specialize on getting the director-general's views on how far his powers will enable him to go and how far he plans to go. To Put McAdoo on Record. Ev ery man in the Sixty-ninth brigade is ! going to be literally put thru his stunts j this coming week under the personal j eye of the colonel of each regiment, j "Division headquarters has stopped ar- ranging the weekly program for the division and leit it up to the brigade ! commanders. ' j Gen. A. B. Donnelly, in command of the Sixty-ninth, wants to find out just how much his men have learned since they have been in the service, so an examination will be held every day ior ' the entire week. One company will be j called out in the morning and will ! have to show just what it has learned ! about all kinds of military tactics and I fighting. The regimental commander i will be present and pass .on their fit- , ness. In the afternoon another com pany will show what they can do, and so on until each company has been , examined. The companies will then be ranked in the order of their fit-J ness. 1 In the Seventieth brigade, com manded by Brig. Gen. Charles I. Mar- I tin, each battalion will work out prob- i lems in fighting for three days, and j the next three days two battalions will j have a sham battle with the third bat- , talion of each regiment. There is a possibility that a large I number of medical officers will be promoted to higher ranks within the near future. A board of officers has been appointed to examine all the medicos commissioned as lieutenants who are seeking promotion. . j SNOW BRAGS ON SNOWj Worth Millions to Wheat Crop, As- j sorts Chicago. Crop Expert Chicago, Jan. 21. The recent rec ord snowfall, while causing millions of dollars damage in various parts of the country, will prove of incalculable value to the winter wheat crop, in the opinion of B. M. Snow, grain expert. 1 The same is true, he said, of winter j oats and all forage crops, f Know declared it is impossible at I this time to make even an approxi mate of the benefit to crops owing to the fact th:it the grouHd in most places was frozen before the snow came. "But the snow, which blankets the entire winter wheat region as far south as northern Texas, will for-n a protective covering against further freezing and will provide much needed moreture in the spring,' -Snow said.--" "The winter oats crop, while al most negligible, will benefit in the same way, as will alfalfa; clover and pasturage." The last crop report of the United States department cf agriculture showed the greatest winter wheat acreage in history, but the poorest condition. The latter was due mostly, it was said, to lack of moisture. FURNACE FIRED HOUSE Damapc Done at Mrs. Warren M. Crosby Home Is Large, The interior of the Mrs. Warren M.
