THE TOPEKA DAILY .STATE 'JOURNAL WEDNESDAY. EVENING,. AUGUST 14 1918 ONE-FIFTH NATION Since War in 1914 Kansas Con tributes Big Wheat Output. This State a Greatx Factor in Supplying World's Bread. Since the . war started in 1914; the state of Kansas has grown an annual Wheat crop equal to one-fifth of the winter wheat output of the entire na tion. This interesting illustration of what a prominent factor Kansas has been in helping to supply the .war torn world with bread is gained from fig ures gathered by J. C. Mohler, secre tary, of the state board of agriculture. These figures include the wheat yields of five crops 1914 to 1918 inclusive. The average for these five crops In Kansas, is 111.553,000 bushels, while the average yearly total for the entire winter wheat crop of the United States for the same period is S52, 594,000 bushels. ' That these have been real war crops is indicated by the fact that only once in its history, before the war broke out, did Kansas exceed the 100,000,000 bushel mark. Kansas is the banner wheat state of the nation, with such a big margin to her credit that it has not even a close competitor. Its nearest competitor in tne Wfi ter. "Wheat growing states Is Nebraska, whose five. year average Is 61.000.000 bushels 50,000,000 less than the Kansas average. North Da kota has second honors in wheat pro duction. It grows" spring wheat ex clusively and has to its credit for a five year average. 99.112.000 bushels, or 10,000,000 bushels under the Kansas average. Remarkable Showing. That Kansas has been able to make such a record, despite a terrific slump in the 1917 crop, the total of which was. 45,000,000, or less than half the yearly "average, and furthermore to the fact -that' for-the last two years the crqB,4n. the, west third of the state has beeit practically a total failure, makes the showing all the more re nte rkable. THeyef)f 1914 was the best il lustration of the possibilities in wheat production the state possesses. That year saw the best the state ever pro duced, when a total of 180,000,000 bushels in- round numbers was the wheat output of Kansas farms. Had conditions in western Kansas been as favorable for wheat as in the eastern part of the state, Kansas's wheat yield this season would- have been probably a third greater than it was. With the federal aid plan, these western Kan sas farmers this year will be able to try again and next total yield may set a new lec.nrd ffn Iantoo r---- t Si COME BACK Increased Wages Cause 5,000 Men to - Remrn- to Railroads. Vashington, Aug. 14. Higher wages recently granted railway shopmen have resulted in recalling to railway employment more than 5,000 work men who had left previously to accept Jobs with higher pay. This has stim ulated railroad work on cars and loco motives and the railroad, administra tion expect to clean up before win ter the entire accumulation of thou sands of damaged cars on sidings for thsj last year. Every company of American soldiers abroad is allowed to adopt ouewar orphan. The total cost to each soldier is 25 cents a month. Each company is euthuaiastlcar ly doing its share.
