All Relative Warned to Beware) of Cantonment Towns In United States. St. Louis, A uk. IS. A campaign of education to. warn relatives of sol diers to remain away from canton ment towns waa launched at a meet- ins of Bed Cross workers held In Bt. Louis Monday. Red Cross workers from virtually every cantonment town in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Okla homa ud Texas were present. Alfred Pair bank, director of civilian relief tor the southwestern division of the Red Cross, presided. Stories of how young women fol lowed their husbands to military camps and as a result suffered many hardships were told by the -workers. Many of these youn- women were left stranded and destitute when the soldiers were ordered to coast towna to embark for France. Theie soldiers were without funds and could do nothing for their wives. The Red Cross cared for many of these penni less women and sent them to their homes at great expense. In some cases the young wives met with sad experiences which exposed them to all the dangers of a young wo man in a strange city. Many workers said soldiers were too timid to write relatives warning them to remain away from the camp be cause they feared they would create the Impression that they no longer cared for them. In these Instances Red Cross workers at the camp, thru home service agents of the Red Cross chap ter. In the soldiers' home, convinced these relatives to forego the trip. Falrbank said that aa a result af the meeting he hojxd to keep many women from the camps. Ha said all Red Cross workers would be asked to notify wives, sisters and mothers not to visit cantonments because of the uncertain conditions, lack of accom modations, the high cost of living and the gathering in some Instances of vicious persons In cantonment towns. The soldiers In addition will be asked to warn their relatives against leaving home and special pleas will be made at such gatherings aa possi ble' asking relatives aid the" govern ment in sustaining the morale of the soldiers by remaining away from the camps. The workers at the meeting said they very seldom came In contact with a case in which the soldier wanted a relative to visit hii. The soldiers in most Instances wer; - afraid to warn relatives not to matte the trip for fear of incurrlns their displeasure. In such instances soldiers are advised to take the matter up with Red Cross workers at their camps.
