y tion's plan for an educational cam
paign this cummer and fall.
"I am pleaeed to know," say the
president's letter, "that despite lb
rnusual burdens imposed upon our
people by the war. they have maintain
ed their schools and other agencies
of education sa nearly at their normal
efficiency. That this should be con
tinued thruout the war and that, in
so far as the draf law will permit,
there should be no falling off in at
tendance in elemei.tary schools, high
schools or colleges is a matter of the
very . greatest importance, affecting
both our strength in war and our na
tional welfare and efficiency when the
war is over. j
"So long as the war continues '.here
will be constant need pf very laige
numbers of men and women of the
highest and most thero training for
war service in many lines. Af'.er the j
war there will be urgent need not
only for trained leadership in all lines
of industrial, commercial, social and
civil life but for a very hieh average
of intelligence and preparation on the '

Washington, Aug. 16. Retail prices
in the United States have Increased (6
per cent since June, 1913, the depart
ment of labor announced today. In
this five-year period the price of milk
has Increased 44 per cent; butter "45
per cent; eggs 65 per cent. Food
prices increased 1 per cent in the last
year.

"Packing House Poet" Writes From
France.
T. R. Allen, who Is & prlvat In
Supply company, 353 infantry, now in
France, has written rome verses, in
praise of the homeland, the Land of
Peace and Plenty. Allen is the son of
Mrs. T. F. Allen, 418 Forest avenue,
Topeka. He was formerly connected
with the Wolff Packing; company, and
was in the office of the city salesman
for eight year's. He went to Funston
in December and has since been cent
to France. He used to be known as
the "Packing? House Poet," and often
wrote verse for the State Journal,
published in th sporting columns and
elsewhere in the paper.
The following verses have recently
been received from him:

were with the house ways and means
committee today srorkint out details
of profits and income taxes explained
"by Secretary McAdoo yesterday.
As" a result of McAdooV appearance
before the committee the tax plans
which he has been Insisting; on for
more than a month will probably go
into the revenue bill with little change.
His program is:
An eighty per cent tax on pure war
profits.
. Excess profits rates as tn the present
law with the treasury given power to
levy enner excess or war profit rates
according to which will eet tbe most
mofiey in each case.

for most of the tomato crop In the

put up most of the crop. About a
third of the tomato crop, which is
usually available for civilian consump
tion will be available next winter.
Taking 70 Per Cent of Salmon.
The government is buying 70 per
cent of the salmon cateh.
