C72 to be raised thruout the nation next month by the thirty denomina tions co-operating in the interchurch world movement will be turned over to colleges and universities of Kansas. These nrhuols ae already planning in detail h'.g expansion and improvement programs. - Seven educational institutions In ttiis slate are to participate in the budget, according to an anonuncemnt made in Topeka today by G. Charles Gray, state campaign director for the movement. The schools which have been desinatU to receive important benefits arc: schools To Be Benefited. Cooper College, Sterling: College of T'.inporia. friends university, Wichita; 1 1 iKhlaiU college. Highland : Kansas 'ity univers'ty, Kansas City. Kan.; Oswego college, and Ottawa university. Cooper college is to receive 139,000, in addition to $605,000 from the New World Movement. Plans include a new dormitory for girl?, to cost $75,000: a new $30,000 gymnasium; a library build ng to cost $50,000. and a central heating plant to cost $15,000. I "ivp thousand dollars is to be eX pendod for now laboratory equipment and $5,00 for library equipment. The faculty is to be increased by a pro fessor of psychology and education. Friends' university at Wichita is to receive $500,000. Among the pro posed improvements are the comple tion of the gymnasium, a woman's residence hall and a heating plant. The askings of Ottawa university are $500,000 for endowment and $350. 000 for new buildings and equipment. Higher salaries for teaehera are con templated. A new science building and a heating plant are among the im provements planned. Oswego college seeks $300,000 for new buildings and an additional sum, not yet fixed, for endowment. Four out of five of all the colleges and universities of the United States, exclusive of ta:;-supported institutions, are at least nominally controlled by fcornf denomination. And the churches spend only $1 for every $40 appro priated by the state for educational purposes. The Interchurch financial campaign, to be waged April 25 to May 2. has as one of its great objec tives the bringing about of a more even ttlance. Jess Willard, former heavyweight pugilistic champion, walked into the sheriff's office Saturday and asked that the warrant against him for disturbing the peace issued Friday and unserved be served, Willard then entered a plea of not guilty in Justice court and gave $ftH bond. The case will be heard March Willard is charged by Fred Logan, neirro policeman, of Lawrence, with disturbing the peace. Logan alleges that Willard called htm names and challenged him to fight. The incident occurred last Friday, when Willard, who was driving a motor car, attempt ed to pass Logan, who was driving a wagon, on a narrow road near here. OS TOUR WITH "JAAVX D." Kansas Governor and Oil Magnate Will Stump U. S. for Church. New York, March 2 2. John D. Ilockefeller, Jr., will visit thirteen pr:nciial eastern and middle western cities eary next month in a speaking tour in behalf of the inter-church world movement, it was announced Saturday. Gov. Henry Allen, of Kan sas, will nccompany him on part of the trip. The itinerary includes Wash ington, Pittsburgh. Cleveland, Buffalo, Button and Philadelphia. Jayhawkcrn Lose Debate. Lawrence. Kan.. March 2 2. The University of Kansas debating team lost to the University of Oklahoma here, by n. two to one decision. The subject debated was: "Resolved, That the Government Should Adopt a Policy of Prohibiting Foreign Immi gration to the United States for a Period of Five Tears.' Kansas had the affirmative. When McCoy & Taylor, paving contractors, began plowing on tha new Santa. Fe trail west of Emporia last week, the first actual work on the new highway was begun. A stretch of road about four miles long: is being hardsurfaced and Eyon county will be paved from border to border this year. Chase county has taken the hint from . its neighbor, and is advertising for bids for paving a block of the new trail. Other counties either have peti tions in, or are in the "petition"' stage. The announcement that Topeka -s bidding for a place on the old Santa Fe trail, has renewed the rivalry be t ween v the two roads, and is stimulat ing work on the new route. Osage City, Allen, Admire and Bushong, which would be eliminated under the proposed change, are opposing the move and Emporia is backing them in their fight. HAS BI HIGHWAY PROGRAM. Montgomery County Plana for Twenty 31 1 ics ol Hard Road. Coffeyville, Kan.. March 22. Twen ty miles of hard surfaced highway for Montgomery county comprise the pro gram adopted by the board of com missioners of Montgomery county for the ensuing summer. Upon his return from Topeka, where he conferred with the state highway commission. County engineer itDDara announced that the program practically is assured. Bids for thirteen miles of highway will be advertised April, 9, he stated. This stretch extends from Coffeyville north to a point two miles beyond Liberty. Montgomery's portion of the federal aid funds, distributed by the state highway commission, originally was not sufficient to meet 60 per cent of the twenty-mile program, but the fail ure of some other counties to put thru their road projects has made possible the increase of federal aid to this county. HICKSON IN KANSAS CITY Healer, Who Comes to Topeka, In Missouri Saturday. Kansas City, Mo., March 22. James Moore Hickson, layman of the Church of England, was scheduled to conduct a. healing mission 'at the Grace Holy Trinity church here Saturday by the "laying on of hands." Mr. Hickson has been touring the United States in an effort to restore the lost ministry of healing. James Moore Hickson will come to Topeka to conduct a spiritual healing missiort at Grace cathedral Thursday and Friday, March 23 and 26. Hun dreds of sick and afflicted have regis tered for treatment by "'the laying on of hands" that Mr. Hickson adminis ters.
