Latest Hep oris from. Leading Business Centres. Faraiors in the "Onitod States have $12,210, 233.31G of capital invested in their business. Of this amount the value of farms is placed at $10,196.S99,G4o, farm iinplementsnt$4Q5,51(J,802, live stock h)0,S.J2.3S7, fertilizers $2d,50,S5G, and fences at $7R.7G.V723. The local and na tional Governments and Boards of Education annually collect in taxation from these toilers nearly one hundred millions of dollars. Tho total contribution or production to he credited to the farmers foot3 up in round numbers $2,500,000,000. The dimensions of tho arch of the Washing ton Aqueduct over Cabin John's Creek exceed those of any of the celebrated engineering structures which aro most commonly pointed to as wonderful achievements in masonry. Tho entire spun is 220 feet, or twenty in excess of the span of tho famous Chester arch across the Dee in England; sixty-eight feet longer than the central arch of London bridge; ninety-two feet longer than tho noted bridgo over the Seine at Keuilly, and one lnmdrtd feet longer than tho arches of the Waterloo bridge over tho Thames. Tho height of tho Washington arch is 101 feot. The chief of the bureau of statistics reports that tho total values of the exports of bread stuffs from the United States during tho month of October, 1S82. and during the four and ten months ended October 31st, 1SS2, as compared with Minilar exports during tho corresponding months of tho preceding year, were as follows: October, 1KS2, $15,205,103; 1SS1, $1-1,839,9! 1. Four months ended October 31, 1SS2, $54.Kl,?19; lbbl, $80,311,(135. Ten months ended October 31st, 1SS2, $1-19,737,900; 1SS1, $192,292,555. nfDCSTKY. The aggregate coal tonnage of the various Pennsylvania carrying companies during Octo ber was 2,945,037 tons, being an increaso of 25S.9S3 tons as compared with the correspond ing month of last year. This amount was made up as follows: Philadelphia and Heading Kail road, 727,663 ; Lehigh Valley Railroad, G03.2S2; Central Railroad of New Jersey, llol()2; Dela ware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, -170,-079; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 322,237; Pennsylvania Railroad, 220,22 i; Pennsylvania Coal Company, 156.453 ; Kew York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad, 22,432. The total ton nage of all the companies for tho year to Octo ber 31, wa3 23,723,283 tons, an increase of 675,666 tons, as compared with tho correspond ing period of last year. The stock of coal on hand at tidewater shipping points October 31st was 524,050 tons, an increase of 10,116 during the month. Tho advance of cotton manufacturing in tho South is marvellous, nearly every dollar of capital having been invested since the close of the war, and more than one-third of it sinco 1880. There are now 252 cotton mills in tho South, with an actual invested capital of Ml. 24 1,450, having 1,237,409 spindles, 20,609 looms, and 1,931 sets of cards. Of these mills North Carolina has 66, Georgia 39, and South Carolina 33. Leadville, during tho past fivo years, has produced 2S,000,000 ounces of silver, 140,000 tons of lead, and 2G,000 ounces of gold, exclu sive of 100,000 tons of ore shipped to other towns for treatment. It will pay this year to tho railroad companies $1,000,000 for the trans portation of bullion to tho Eastern markets. The business failures for last week reported to New York number 139, of which 131 took place in tho country and eight in New York city. The Eastern States had twenty-three, Western thirty-seven, Southern twenty-nine, Middle eighteen, Pacific twelve and Canada twelve. Tli3 Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, of Scrauton, Pa., after two years of unbroken and prosirous activity, began ICovember 16th working on half time. The sudden falling ofT in orders for steel rails, caused by tho shrink age in railroad building, is the reason given. Eight bunches of matches a year for every man, woman, and child are now produced. A tax is paid to the Government of $3,600,000 on 400,000,000 boxes. Nino thousand cords of wood are consumed. A model cotton gin is to be established at irogansvillc, Ga., with machinery so arranged that when the cotton starts at ono point it will not slop until it comes out a packed bale. It will run thirty-five bales per day. A mxuuntcturing lirm in Columbus, Ga., pays out $400,000 :i year in wages. In the city aro 2,167 ojKjrativc in textile mills that work 1,'JtiO loom?, and the consumption of cotton in a sin gle year was 16,931 bales. j:ati.soa!s The report of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail road Company for tho year ending September 30, JSS2, shows gross earnings from all sources of $16.383,873 ; net earnings, $7,J51,GC2. The net earnings of the main line and branches were $-1,372,913; of the Washington branch, $221,253; Parkersburg branch, $108,070; Cen tral Ohio Division, $314,832 ; Lake Erie Divis ion, $231,701; Chicago Division, $146,190; Pitts burg Division, $1,542,123; Wheeling, Pittsburg and Baltimore Railroad, $10,130; Newark, Som erset, and Straits". ille Railroad Company, $13, 078. After paying fixed charges and dividends of 10 per cent., a surplus of $1 ,G 18,978 was carried to profit and loss, making the amount to tho credit of that account $43,907,G5S. Somo of the recent enterprises in railroad construction arc the pushing of the Denver and Rio Grande toward tho Colorado lino; tho pro ject of constructing a road from Chicago to Hannibal; another to pierce the coal-fields of GalHiKilis. On the new Chattanooga line, from Rome to Atlautaaud Macon, a distance of 317 miles, through trains have begun to run. An other division runs from Macon due north into East Tennessee. Tho Georgia Pacific is being pushed ahead at the rate of half a mile a day. Surveys are being made through the rich coal fields of Alabama. The October statement of the Philadelphia and Reading liailroad Company show the receipts have been about $1,340,000; deducting from this $75,000 for renewal fund, leaves $1,203,000 for interest account. The net receipts up to October 1st was $8,380,013, and the addition of last month's profits brings those of the year to November 1 up to $9,645,048. The not receipts for October, l&ol, were $1,032,205, and for the year to November, 1881, $9,095,939. This shows an increase in tho not profits of $549,135 for tho current year over hut year. The tunnel cut into tho main rango of the Rocky Mountains, 150 miles southweit of Den ver, Col., is tho highest in either America or Europo, and its approaches are described as marvels of engineering skill, laid through scenes unrivalled for grandeur and magnifi cence. It is 1,700 feet in length, and 11,500 feet above the sea. So nicely was the engineer ing done, that when the workmen met tho variation in the bores was only about ono inch. It was tho work of the Denver and South Park division of tho Union Pacific Railroad. Railroad building is being carried on to a stupendous extent. It costs about $25,000 per milo and yet fully 10,000 miles will be added to the facilitiesof tho United Statesduringthejear 1882. This is exclusive of a considerable addi tion of lines in Canada and Mexico in which American canit.il is intended. Some of tho road is double track, and most of it laid with steel rails. The outlay for this single form of internal transportation improvement reaches annually about $250,000,000. The earnings of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company for the year ending September 30th were $5,868,326, and the expenses $3,89,637, leaving the net income as $l,9o'9,GS8, against $1,731,21-1 for the previous year. THE STOCK MARKET. Iteileu of the Week in Wr.H Street and Cloning Prh-M. Special to Tho National Tribune. New Yonrc, Nov. 22. Tho liquidation which has been progressing for the past two or three days, continued in a pretty active manner for the first half of tho day, and wero pressed for sale regardless of price. This has brought out a great many stale holding1?, which havo been impending over the market for a long while and havo interfered with fresh ventures. Evory stock-broker will appreciate how im possible it is to do business with an office clogged up with high-priced stocks, and thero has been a shaking out of this sort of thing to day that may be productive of healthy results to tho market in the future. Wo aro very much inclined to think that the rally of to night will develop into a pretty fair rise for the next few days, as tho advance of to-day fails to bring out many stocks, and there aro rumors at the close of another call fo bonds by the Government. Thero has been exceedingly good buying of a certain class of securities all during the day, and we ourselves have had some experience of more outsiders coming into the market than for a long while. Setting aside any question of value and looking merely at the indications on the surface, we should not regard the market as a particularly safe ono to ho short on for tho time being. But wo would call attention to our frequent cautions during tho past week. Wo have to-day wit nessed fluctuations of nearly five per cent., traceable only to tho machinations of a few in dividuals, and tho entire business of Wall street is at the mercy of tho same influences. Still, money was very active all day, ruling at about from fifteen to thirty per cent, closing at about ten per cent. CLOSING QUOTATIONS. Reported for Tun National Tkihune by TL H.
