hero of the battle of Santiago and he

Jn Maryland Oct 1839 and was
graduated from the Naval Academy in
1SG0 He served thru the civil war
and was sent to the Arctic in charge of
the Greeley relief expedition He is a
very jolly gentleman and fond of life
and society
Washington has had two somewhat
remarkable cures in the last month
One of them was a case of pellagra
and the -woman who had it seemed
doomed when she went to the hospital
and the other is the cure of a case of
infantile paralysis The subject of the
latter was Bill Ilinrichs the pitcher of
the Washington Baseball Club who was
attacked with infantile paralysis last
July When taken to the George Wash
ington University Hospital his pitching
arm was completely paralyzed and both
legs were affected He has been taken
to his home at Los Angeles Cnl and
while he may never be able to pitch
ball again his arm will soon be strong
enough to perform ordinary duties His
physician was Dr S Clifford Cox a

Another big slide has developed in
Culebra Cut of the Panama Canal at

blessed with high bred horses and since
the institution of electric motors the

horse may be If his feet get sore and
he gets lame in any way he soon goes
to pieces Just as soon as ono of the
better class of horses shows symptoms
of falling he is sold for a song to the

saya that when questioned as to what
had most Impressed her on her first
visit to London she replied The clev

poem to the Atlantic Monthly in which
it was printed and somewhat praised
but small hoed was taken of it Chap
lain McCabe the singing parson Is said
to have made the poem famous by
kinging It in Libbey Prison It was then
taken up by the soldiers and became
the great battle hymn of the Union

prison
Mrs Howe always took the intensest
pleasure in hearing this poem recited
or sung and was proud of having been
its author Indeed Mrs Howe was al
most childlike in her love of approba
tion not for vanity but just because
from her very childhood -she wanted to
do the tilings that interested people
made them think and thus made them
better and she knew that In her Bat
tle Hymn of the Republic was em
bodied the soul of tho Union and that
its sentiment was uplifting and that
one who loved it well enough to sing it
must feel that it made for good citizen
ship
It was while she was In Washington
at this time that Mrs Howe nearly
frightened to death made her first real
public speech She made it to the
troops of the 1st Mass H A but she
has made thousands of speeches since
and no one who ever sat within the
sound of her voice but that felt the
influence of her wonderful intellect and
her sweet soul
In summing up her lone life of ac
tivity Mrs Howe gave utterance to the
wisdom gained In her almost century

to hear not of your literary work but

remember that I had had any and so

life of Boston and to appreciate the
nigh thinking or its choice spirits I
have sat at the feet of the masters of
literature art and science and have
been graciously admitted into their fel
lowship I have been the chosen poet
of several high festivals to wit the
celebration of Bryants GOth birthday
the commemoration of the cente nary of
his birth and the unvaillng of ihe statue
of Columbus in Central Park New
York In the Columbian year so called
I have been the founder of a club of
young girls which has exercised a salu
tary influence upon the growing wo
manhood of my adopted city and has
won for itself an honorable place in
the community serving also as a model
for similar associations- In other cities
I have been for many years the Presi
dent of the New England Womans Club

ment of Women I have been heard
