Forn-rjrc the Not. The prominence
which California has attained in, the Union
and througitont the worhl, arese from her ex
trabrdinary product of gold. Her iireeent
wealth of grain and fruit, of manufacture
and commerce, m based broadly ujwn hor
mines. The trading spirit of the chief dty
of the State appears inclined to ignore this
palpable truth. At the banquet given by the
Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco in
the month of N'ovcnitx r last, eighteen toasts
were inven and rwivwiderl to. Ererv inter-
t in the Rit everything, indeed, hnt min
ing was toasted atnl complimented with set
eechae. One of the Meakrs reicrrod to
mining, hut in tenns or derogation. lie lo
Heved "that tho great, Benton was moro than
half right when he denounced the 'possession
of gold and silver mines the greatest curve
with which the industry of a cousin' could
be afflicted.' " The speaker " believed fa rther
that until the julitical economy reverts to
those time-honored principle which place
agriculture, the meclmnie arl nnd inanufee-
Uiras at tne nead nf the lit. and mining for
tlie prcioH metals at the foot, our rma
nent prosperity will remain in abeyance."
the Dteech Irom which this extract was taken
was characterized ax thefltfst of the occasion.
It Iwtrays the Umeof Peckanlff in the lament
for thoim " time honoreil jirineiples," under
tho influence of which California would lc
to-day only an insignificant State. But min
ing for tho precious metals has had its .day;
it liasceaj-od to bo rosoctal)Ic to men of
godly livej it must go to the foot. Yc
should expect to be told of course, that the
speaker drew two littlo tracts from his pocket
and edified tho Chamber of Commerce br
reading the stories of the MPis Littlo fer-
chant1 awl tho 'Naughty Rig Mmer." It is
a bird of ill omen that fouls its own nest.
But perhaps the speaker is a member of the
cormorant family, who has used hie talents to
such advantage that he can af!oru to kick
over the basin that hold hi porridge. Min
ing for tho precious metals at the foot," in
deed ! The judgment may be affirmed that at
no period of hor future hfctory, as glorious
as it is likely to lie, will California ajmesir as
frandly as during the first soore of years of
er mining epoch. Veew Mew IlttvitU,

Foctic Names of States.
Some of tlie poetic names of the various
States which comjKrte the Union are cleverly
conceive', while others seem to have leon
bestowed without much discrimination. Tho
following is a list of most of theSo ?fdnciful"
appellatives:
Arkansas Bear State.
California Golden Stato. - -
Connecticut Freestone State, Land of
Steady Hnbits, Nutmeg State. "
Delaware Blue IIciil "Diamond State. '-
Florida Peninsula State. ' ' '
Illinois Garden State, Prairie State, Suck-

Rhode Island Little Bhody. ;'
South Carolina Palmetto State. '
Texas Lone Star State. ,

Virginia Mother of Presidents, Mother of k"

Wisconsin Badger State.
It will be observed that Alabama, Georgia, -Maryland,
Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, and
West Virginia are still unbaptized by the
poets. Some of the names, likc'Camdsn and
Araboy, Wolverine State, Corn Cracker, and
Bear State, are certainly not complimentary
to tlie peoplo who inhabit the Common
wealths thus characterized. Those applied
to the original thirteen States are in gcnoral "
more happily chosen than those besttra'cd on

TiinNBwCncsiusG Process at MiairosA.
We undertand, (says the San Francisco Min
ing and Scientific Pre,) that Prof. Silitnan,
one of the principal proprietors and Managers
of the Quair Hill Mining Co., a few weeks
since, sent two tons of the ore from that mine
to the mill nt Maripoa, to l treated by the
process now in operation there dry crushing
with stamp, and final pulverization by the
ball and barrel process. The ore. sucli as
sent, when worked at the mine by the ordi
nary stamp mill process, yields about $5 to
the ton. The yield at Mariposa, we are in
formed, was 15 to the ton. It was put
through the barrels in three charges of alwut
1.300 pounds each. The yield of the separate
charges was cry neariy equal. This cxjieri
mont is considered a very fair test of the rela
tive value of the two processes. The yield
was increased from $.1 to $10 per ton. Of
the relative cost we have no knowledge; but
from the statements of the owners of the
Mariposa process, it can bear no manner of
proportion to tho reported increase of yield.
ine cwaracier oi tne ore, however, is ex

which must unavoidably bo washed away by
