Trouble ATlth the Texits Drive
A number of herds of southern
Texas cattle are on their way west
and trouole and bloodshed is feared
before the season is over A herd of
6000 cattle was stopped at Harrold
Texas last week and forbidden to
move any further The governor was
telegraphed to for help and it is said
he will support the southern men with
troops West Texas men are equally
as determined and a clashing may be
expected at any moment It isa life
and death matter with west Texas
ranchmen Many of them if not
the bulk have their lifes earnings at
stake Their all is in their cattle
and they are as susceptible to Texas
fever as the natives It is a test fight
with the southern cattlemen who think
that if they can fight their way through
this season they have a precedent
established for next year But they
will not get through savj by force of
arms and a trade that has to be sup
ported at the point of the bayonet
is a very risky one South Texans will
find that belore they are through that
other men have rights as well as them
selves and that the western cattlemen
arc abundantly able to take care of
their interests Should Governor
Ireland fight southern drovers though
to the western border of the state they
have then but begun their work
Kansas Colorado Arizona and New
Mexico have rigid laws in relerence
to southern cattle and their authori
ties nil sec that their home interests
is protected
The day ha passed when the south
em drover can drive his cattle over
the west it will Too many catte
were lost by Texas lever last year for
western ranchmen and breeders to
risk their herds again by the presence
of southern cattle The southern
drive is over and any fight to rees
tablish the old in southern Tex
ps cattle will be in vain The risk in
mingling southern and weotern cattle
the tint season up is too great The
ranges are all too well stocl ed to al
low of such chances as ranchmen
wvie willing to take in the past
Southern cattle in the future that are
admitted in the west will have to be
acclimated wintered one season in
western Texas before they will be al
lowed to pass the dead line The
west would like to have young Texas
cattle for its ranges and our r nch
men will be able to handle them for
some years to come at a profit but
they must be like Cresars wife above
suspicion Kansas City Live Stock

How to Obtain Ofllce
A correspondent writes that about a
month ago ayoung man came to Wash
ington from North Carolina for a gov
ernment position under the new ad
ministration He made application
to the two senators from his state but
without success Within a week he
was without a cent and unable to bor
row He joined a gang of workmen
i ho were engaged in impoving the
streets and became a day laborer By
some means Senators Vance and Ran
som became acquainted with his ac
tion and wrote strong letters of en
dorsement to Secretary Whitney The
other day the Secretary appointed
him to the position of watchman in
the Navy Department
When can I begin work he
asked
Not before next week replied
the superintendent
Then Ill remain at street im
proving until the place is acant I
cant jfford to lose a day
Theres a little moral in this for
ofhce scekers Go to Washington
and shovel dirt for a time and then
make application for a government
office
or Iutercbl to Miners
A Washington telegram says Sec
retary Lamar issued an order to day
of interest to miners everywhere on
the public domain December 4 1834
while thousands of mining claims were
pending an order was made by Sec
retary Teller that in applications for
lode claims where the survey conflicts
with a prior claim and the ground in
conflict is excluded the applicant not
only has no right to the excluded
ground but hs has no right to that
portion of any vein or lode the top or
apex of which lies within such exclu
ded ground unless his location wa
prior to May 19 187J The order
made to drry puts things back just
where they were before Mr Tellers
order was issued as follows In en
tries made prior to the receipt by the tives
fcMpM1 fr
register and receiver of the circular of
December 1884 the survey if free
from objectionunder the former prac
tice need not be amended to conform
to the provisions ol paragraph 2 of
said circular All decisions under
said circular in conflict with the fore
going may to that extent be recalled

Candidates
There are four candidates for the
office of surveyor general of Arizona
C B Foster of Prescott was the
first in the field Mr Foster has been
a deputy United States surveyor-general
for many years under the vari
ous surveyor generals of Arizona His
supporters in the east it is claimed
are Samuel J Tilden ex Governor
Seymour and Abram S Hewitt all of
New York
Rodman M Price of Tombstone
a candidate is also a deputy United
States surveyor and has been for six
years His support for the office it
is claimed is by New Jersey political
influence
W H Walker of Tucson in the
tobacco and cigar business is a prom
inent candidate and has an excellent
reputation His appointment is ex
pected to be brought about through
the influence of old Virginians and
congressmen from California
Paul Moroney Sr an old Demo
cratic war horse of Tucson who has
been long engaged in the hotel busi
ness in that city is a strong candidate
He has the support it is said of
Judge Field Senator Fair and nearly
all the old Califomians are for him
which coupled with the fact that he
is on the ground make the probabili
ties strongly in his favor
The Santa Rosa Cal Republican
says a redwood tree cut in that coun
ty furnished all the timber for the
Baptist church in Santa Rosa one of
the largest church edifices in the coun
try The interior of the building is
finished in wood there being no
plaster walls Sixty thousand shingles
flere made from the tree after enough
was taken for the church Another
redwood tree cut near Murphys mill
in that county about ten years ago
fimished shingles that required the
constant labor of two industrious men
for two years before the tree was used
up This item is true to the letter
J B Fitch who is now an employee
of this office was at the time one of
the editors and proprietors of the
Santa Rosa Republican and the item
was written by himself and knows the
above statement to be true The tree
referred to from the timber of whkh
the church was built was cut near
Guerneyville in that county and
when standing was 30 feet in diame
ter at the butt and about 300 feet in
height all solid timoer
The Supreme Couit of Kansas is
now considering a very delicate case
involving a principtl of practice not
yet passed upon so far as known In
retiring- for the purpose of deliberat
ing over a case it had heard the jury
resorted to prayer as a means of aiding
members in their deleberations Then
the defeated party to the suit appealed
from the verdict of the court on the
ground that the jury was unduly in
fluenced The final decision will be
watched with interest Jurors arc
now excluded on the ground that they
read the papers and are ambitious to
become intelligent and it is not un
likely that piety may at some time al
so be urged as a disqualification
Whether it will be accepted or not it
is impossible to say but if criminals
wen the arbiters it passes without say
ing that no man of prayer would ever
enter the box
The intermarriage of royal families
in Europe in case of a war may have
a tendency to mix things up some-
vhat England and Russia are inti
mately related by two royal marriages
The Prince of Wales and the Russian
Czar are brothers-in-law each having
married a pretty daughter of King
Chnstain of Denmark The princes
wife is Alexandria and the Czars is
Dagmar two of the most charming
women of Europe Their children
are cousins Then the wife of Prince
Alfred Duke of Edinburgh the
Queens second son is the Grand
Duchess Maria sister of the czar The
Czar seems to take the national es
trangement very cooly but his royal
kinsmen and kinswomen in England
are said o be deeply grieved at the
prospect of a war which will make
them enemies to their Russian
