Since his return Mr Oury has been
besieged on all sides by the Democra
cy to know what he thought of the
big captain of the Democratic party
Among other anxious inquirers was a
representative of the Star who learn
ing that he had a few leisure moments
nailed htm for a time with a view of
prospecting the ex representatives
opinion on the administration and

have seen President Cleveland and no
doubt talked with him and observed
his way of taking hold of the affairs
of the government what do you think
of him
Mr Oury The selection of
Grover Cleveland as the chief magis
trate of the United States in my
opinion was the best move the Ameri
can people have made in many years
His strength of mind his firm deter
mination his honesty and integrity
of purpose to do right render him
eminently fit to take the helm of
state at this particular time He has
the disposition and ability and will
use both to correct the innumerable
wrongs that have been fastened on the
country by the Republican party dur
ing a reign of nearly quarter of a
century Under his administration
the government will be brought back
to its pristine purity when honesty
economy and due regard for the in
terests of the whole people were the
motives that actuated every one in of
ficial position when the idea pre
vailed that officeholders were the ser
vent3 ot the people and not their
masters Such a state of things the
people have long desired and through
the medium of President Clevelands
administration I have no doubt their
desires will be accomplished

south since the inauguration what is
the general opinion ol the Democra
cy as to the coune pursued thus far
by the President
So far as I have been able tp learn
the course pursued by the President
meets- withthc approbation of the
great majority of people who seem
to be inspired with great confidence
as to the beneficial results that will
flow from his adminutratian Of
course there are as might be expect
ed a few disappointed office seekers
who are chagrined and soured over
their failure to obtain positions and
injheir vexatjon seek to condemn the
President for what they deem his
tardiness in makfng a clean sweep ol
all the Republican office holders in
the country and replacing them with
Democrats but to the thinking of
the intelligent portion of the people
this appears as absurd as it is unjust
they recognizing tlie lacs that it would
be impossible for the administration
without good cause to make immedi
ate changes all the officcsiin the
United States Such a course would
certainly endanger tlie efficiency of
the public scryiceand give jusj cause
of complaint by the people- I be
lieve that the -President is moving as
fast as the exigencies of the occasion
require He is cautious and in thi
nature ol things he ought to be but
that out of his abundant caution

Animportant suit which will doubt
less attract great attention all over the
country on account ot the interest
involved and the world wide
reputation of the parties bringing it
has been instituted in the Circuit
Court of Baltimore city by the pro
prietors of the famous St Jacobs Oil
trading as The Charles A NoglerCom
pany against Adolph C Meyer Co
The bill of complaint recites that the
complainants are the manufacturers of
a medical preparation having curative
properties and valuable as a remedy
for the relief of pain To distinguish
it from those of a like kind manufac
tured by other persons the name of
St Jakobs Oel or as translated into
English St Jacobs Oil was adopted
as a fanciful designation of the article
In order further to distinguish it a pe
culiar red color was adopted for the
preparation which is one of its dis
tinctive marks Other indicia used
by them were a cylindrical bottle of
peculiar appearance with a certain la
bel afnixed thereto and with inscrip
tions thereon presenting an appear
ance to the eye which from long use
caused the whole package to be rec
ognized at once as the liniment man
ufactured by them They advertised
the preparation at a vast outlay in
many countries and in more than 20
languages Within the wrappers of
the bottle they also enclosed a circu
lar the whole foiming a package of
peculiar shape and appearance which
was well known to customers and to
the trade generally as the form of
package used by them Among other
means by which they advertised the
remedy were posttrs placards signs
illustrations and sentences They
charge that the defendant conceived
the fraudulent design of appropriating
to himself the benefit of their outlay
time and labor that h prepared a
liniment so closely resembling the
remedy prepared by them in odor
that only the most experienced ob
server can detect the difference H6
selected the peculiar color of the rem
edy known as St Jacobs Oil and
imitated the name and various signs
and symbols used by them He used
1 bottle so closely resembling that of
complainants with a label having
sticn a close resemblance to the labels
on their bottles and affixed to the bot
tie as they affixed their labels that the
the u hole packaue presented almost
identically the same general appear
once as the package containing the
liniment made by them Upon the
label on the bottle he printed the
words Salvation Oil followed by
the woids The Greatest Cure ou
Earth for Pain in close imitation in
general appearance of the words prin
ted on their hbel He has also imi
tated on the label the paragraphs in
different languages which they use
and withinlhe wrappers he has plac
ed a circular contrived and prepared
in imitation of the circulars accompa
nying St Jacobs Oil and in direct
infringement of complainants rights
He has also placed within the wrapper
of the bottle a folding corkscrew of
the size shape and form of that con
tained in the wrapper of St Jacobs
Oil and has imitated the methods of
advertising St Jacobs Oil instead of
a monk sitting or standing having post
ed the representation of a nuu hold
ing aloft in her hand a bottle on
which appear the words Salvation
Oil
They charge therefore that he has
with fraudulent purpose intention arid
contrivahceput upon themarket an
article closely resembling in smell and
color and in the mode of putting it up

service in the past two or three years
and that was only technically illegal
was a lot of advertising notes which
were printed to have an appearance
of money but which did not purport
to be money The average person
has become so intelligent that he will
not take counterfeit money if it is
offered him and the counterfeiters
knowing this have given up the traffic
It requires such a great and expensive
outlay to make money that resembles
the cenume in the important particu
lars that counterfeiters have sought
other occupations Besides this the
law is so severe and the penalty so
certain that there is too much risk
attending it There is however
some counterfeiting of the silver coins
and this is about the only thing left
for the secret service to look after
