Cupid was of the opinion that the overthrow was the direct result of the interference of the American Minister, while Cecil Brown thought that while the lnndlmr intimidated the Queen and saved blood shed that the overthrow would have tak en place sooner or later. Both thought that the Queen should be reimbursed for the loss of the crown lands revenues. K. OF P. LKVKE. Saturday Evening Open House Will bo 11 Popular .Movement. The Knights of Pythias successfully inaugurated their Saturday night open house at their hall last Saturday evening. Tlie plan is one which will extend the scope of usefulness of the order iu Hilo nnd arouse deeper interest nmoiig the members. The K. of P. hall will be open to visitors nud strangers from 8 p. m. to 13 on Saturday evenings nnd in the ofter noon on Sundays. Games, refreshments nnd reading materials will be supplied. The initial openin,; last Saturday uight was most enjoyable. Scores of friends of the members of the order visited the pleasant hall and parlors. By way of amusement there was ping pong, billiards and cards. Light lunch was served to all comers and no one came who did not pass an enjoyable eveniiiL'. The Knlulits -will further add to the attractions of their Saturday evening receptions which promise to be one of the most enjoyable features of Hilo social life this winter. NEW INDUSTRY. Mayer of Washington who Is 111 tlie Islands inves tigating the use of bagasse iu the manu facture of paper. He has made n tour of Onhu nud Knuai trying to make arinngcmcuts with the plantations for their surplus bagasse and is here for the same purpose. Under standing thot there is much more surplus bagasse on this island he will spend sev eral weeks making investigations on Oahli "where so much of the refuse is used as fuel it cannot be handled nt a cheap enough rate 111 most instances to pay in working it. As the bagasse is so full of moisture that only about forty per cent of it can be used it is the idea to establish a reduction works 011 this Island to make the stuff ready for shipment to Honolulu where the piper mill will be established should things go right. The mill meausau in vestment of about a quarter of n million dollars and would employ from three to fifteen hundred bauds as the business succeeded. Lincoln Club Comes Into Line for Straight Nominees. The Lincoln Club held an enthusiastic meeting Wednesday night at the Fire man's hall and discussed local political conditions with a vim. tlicre were thirty-five members present. The Club is composed of Portuguese American cit izens. The following resolutions were unanimously passed: 1. That the Lincoln Club of Hawaii heartily endorse the platform of the Re publican party, adopted in Territorial Convention at Honolulu, September ist, 1902, and 2. That the Lincoln Club of Hawaii fully ratify nud support the Republican ticket nominated nt the District Conven tion iu Hilo, September 15th, 1902. Ohm Mill Dunce. The dance to be given by the Olaa Sugnr Company on Saturday evening promises to be a success iu every way. A special train has been arranged to carry the guests from Hilo, leaving Wul nkea station at half past seven, returning after the dance. This train will run into the sidetrack nt the mill, allowing the passengers to step from the train into the sugar room where the dance will be held. Ililo Citizens Plan to Make Their Visit Plensant. The announcement of the proposed visit of the Senatorial Commission was reciivcd in Hilo with satisfaction. There nre many stories to be poured into the willing ears of the Commissioners. Preparations for the proper reception and attention to the distinguished visitors were soon under way. SherifT Andrews called n mass meeting Monday night at Fireman's Hall which was attended by the representative citizens of Hilo, The general impression was that the visitors would be here for work and that any extensive entertainment would be out of'place. The suggestions of a ban quet or a luau were therefore abandoned. The Commission will sec the Volcano and Saturday afternoon be tendered a reception iu the Elks Hall.
