As history naturally lends the
course, other work will, as far as
practicable, cordate with it. The
new, atid the passing event are
provided for in "Nature-work," in
one branch of art led by Miss Sev
erance, in some readings from mod
ern literature, and in "Current
Events."
The program promises well, and
it is hoped that any Hilo residents
who arc interested will join the
circle, or attend as visitors, where
they will be cordially welcome
The usual number of attendants
last year was about thirty. Several
valuable papers or addresses were
presented by professional friends in
our community physicians, edi
tors, clergymen, lawyers. Friends
have also largely aided the aims of
the society by loans of books and
pictures bearing on and illustrating
the subjects considered. The ob
liging librarian of the town library
must not be left out of this count.
For all these favors the above indi
cated ladies and gentlemen are
heartily thanked.
The meetings are held Tuesday
evenings (.very alternate week.
The only expense incurred by the
society is about $25 a year for elec
tric lights.
The subject in history at the
meeting of next Tuesday is the ac
count of early Rome through the
"Period of Kings" to 510 B. C.
Preparation for historical topics
can be made from any ordinary
historical work.
HILO WATER SUPPLY.
Improvements Which (live Us nil
Admirable System.
For many years Hilo has been
without an adequate water supply
and as for fire protection, that is
something she has never known.
Recent extensive improvements
have been made which with those
still in progress will give the city n
water works systen adequate for
the present and for many years to
come.
The water for Hilo is obtained
from springs on lands at Piihouua
at at elevation of 477 feet above
mean tide water. From these
springs it is conveyed through 4090
feet of 8 inch pipes to a tank at an
elevation of 230 feet. From here
it is distributed to the city through
6, 4 and 3 inch pipes. Careful ex
amination and measurement of the
flow of water from the 8 inch pipe
at the tank shows that there is more
than enough water delivered to
supply the city of Hilo for many
years to come. At night when the
use of water practically ceases, more
than two thirds of the water runs
to waste through the overflow of
the tank.
In designing the new system the
Department of Public Works has
decided that a reservoir of 1,000,000
gallons capacity should be con
structed at this point. This would
enable use to be made of the flow
during the entire 24 hours and
give a suppply for emergencies of
fire or difficulties in the supply.
It his been decided also upon
completion of the reservoir to aban
don the so-called lower spring as
there will be no necessity for its use.
The sooner this is done the better
for the health of Hilo.

ROOSEVELT'S NARROW ESCAPE.
President's Carriage Collides With
Trolley Car.
Pittsfield (Mass.), Septembers.
President Roosevelt escaped a tragic
death by only a few feet in n col
lision between his carriage and an
electric street car in this city today,
while one of his most trusted
guards, Secret Service Agent Wil
liam Craig, was instantly killed
and David J. Pratt of Dalton, who
was guiding the horses attached to
the vehicle wits seriously injured.
President Roosevelt himself was
badly shaken up, but received only
a slight facial bruise.
Secretary Cortelyou, who occu
pied a seat directly opposite the
President in the carriage, sustained
a minor wound on the back of the
head, and Governor Crane, who sat
beside the President, escaped with
out a scratch. The carriage was
demolished by the impact of the
rapidly moving car, and the wheel
horse on the side nearest the car
was killed. The crew nud passen
gers of the car escaped injury.
The President and party were
driving from this city to Lennox,
through South street, one of the
principal thoroughfares of Pittsfield
which was lined with cheering peo
ple, and the catastrophe happened
in plain view of hundreds whose
happiness at the advent of the
Nation's chief was suddenly turned
to grief.

PRESIDENT CANNOT INTERVENE.
Investigation Shows Thnt Roosevelt
Can Do Nothing.
Washington, September 3. Car
roll D. Wright, Commissioner of
Labor, was designated by the
President in June to investigate
and report to him the cause and
conditions accompanying the pres
ent controversy between the Penn
sylvania anthracite coal operators
and their miners. Twelve days
later Wright submitted his findings
to the President.
After carefully going over the
report, the President submitted it
to the Attorney General, who,
after giving it full and careful con
sideration, reports that the Execu
tive has no power whatever to
take action in the matter. The
report, accordingly, is made public.
