ATHRRTON Directors. sary of his birth is always the sig nal for his countrymen in this vicf- nity to meet and sing the songs of Auld Lang Syne: This year all previous efforts of the Hilo Burns Club in the way of anniversary en tertainment were surprasscd. The birthday of Burns always means a banquet, a ball or a concert in Hilo and the hospitality of the Scotsmen is extended to many who never saw the laud of Bums. This year it was a concert at Sprocket's Hall nnd it was one of the best of Hilo's many high class home talent entertainments. The hall was crowded with nn appreci ative audience. There were seven teen numbers on the program as follows: Overture Selected Hilo Orchestra Vocal Solo "Comiti' Thro' the Ryo" Mrs. Paul Kartell) Male Quartette "Of n' the Airls".. Messrs. Every number on the program was generously applauded and the encores were responded to in eacli case greatly to the pleasure of the audience. The Hilo public was especially interested in the first appearance of the Amateur orchestra and looks forward to many future pleasant hours under the spell of music that reminds everyone ol Home. 1 tie new or chestra is directed by Mrs. J. Affonso, Miss Sarah Lyman, W. Raesdale and Geo. Hapai. The final piece by the orchestra was a Scottish air and took the house by storm. Hilo's popular vocalists, Mrs. Paul Bat tels, Mrs. A. C. McKeuncy, Mrs. Homer L. Ross and the Elk quar teete, all won new laurels on' this occasion. The piece by the mixed quartette, composed of Mesdames Ross and McKeuney and Mcssers Prouty and Howlaud was consid ered especially fine, as was also the inimitable duet by V. C. Cook and Mrs. Bartels. "The Genius of Robert Burns" was the subject of the Eulogy of the evening, pronounced by W. C. Cook of Papaikou. The arrangements for the anni versary concert were faultless in every detail. The Burns Club de monstrated again that it knows how to handle a proposition.
