It is a far cry at present to dis
cuss the use of radium, or radium
salts, for illuminating or heating
purposes. I do not suppose there
is one-tenth of an ounce of radium
in the whole world. If you can
imagine getting that amount of
radium, together it would supply
more energy than 250 tons of dyna
mite. Few persons who talk about
radium and its components realize
the great scarcity of the raw ma
terial for yielding radium or the
exceedingly minute particles used
in tlie experiments that nave
astounded the world. It is impos
sible to say where the future sup
ply of raw material is to come from,
1 believe that in America carnotite
looks promising as a basis for it.
Cleavite, a mineral found in Nor
way, is also looked upon as a
favorite source of supply.

got in motion; and in a minute or
two so rapidly does the tool work
a hole about five inches in dia

entire length of the auger. Then
another hole is drilled parallel with
the first, and another until the pile
has been undermined, so to speak,

is seen when it is stated that two
men can get out ns much salt by
the power method as two dozen
men by using picks and shovels.
Currier Pigeons.
The pigeon post is largely used
by both the naval and militarj
foices of Japan. A movable loft
is attached to the headquarters.
Scouts arc furnished with a knap
sack capable of holding four birds.
When they wish to communicate
with headquarters they write out
the message and place it in tube
which is attached to the bird's leg.
The pigeon is then liberated and
