Gillls has been detached from command of the South Atlantic Station, and placed on waiting orders. Nearly all of the ships composing the Squad ron of Evolution are in need of repairs, and work will probably begin on them at once. The Boston had seen considerable service in the West Indies and North Atlantic before the squadron was organized, aud the repairs on her will probably extend over a period of 3 months, nccessitatinc an expenditure of $30,000. She will be repaired at tho New York Navy Yard. The Chicago, Yorktown, and Atlanta are also In need of extensive repairs, and these three ves sels will probably bo distributed among the yards at Boston, Norfolk, and Kittery. The Richmond, shortly to go out of commission, will be repaired at the Norfolk Navy Yard. Capt. Allen V. Reed, declared by the Dept. not guilty of tho charges preferred against him by Rear Adm. Gillls in tho Norfolk court-martial, has resumed command of tho Richmond. Lieut. Wainwright Kellogg has been ordered to duty connected with tho installation of elec tric lights on hoard the naval ships at the Cramp yard, Philadelphia, relieving Lt. B. A. Fiske. who is placed on waitiug orders. Lieut. Comdr. Asa Walker has been detached from tho Naval Academy, and placed on waiting orders. Lieuts. T. B. Howard, J. B. Briggs, David Daniels, T. M. Tho Attorney General has decided that sec. 1 of "the act to prevent desertions from tho Army" is applicable to the Marino Corps, aud hereafter tho paymr. of that corps will retain from tho pay of all men enlisted subsequent to July 1, 18U0, tho sum of $4 per month for tho 1st year of enlistment. Tho Dept. has denied tho report that the Philadelphia will bo subjected to a further ofll elal trial. Tho vessel fulfilled all tho require raonta of tho contract and was accepted. The report arose from tho information that tho Phil adelphia will shortly bo given a sea voyage for the purpose of demonstrating that sho malutalns tho coutract requirements. Work at tho new naval ord. proving grounds at Indian Head has been commenced. Con tracts havo been lot for tho building of a wharf, railroad tracks, and a scow for the transporta tion of guns, also for frame houses to be lo cated on tho grounds. Tho trial trip of tho new cruiser San Fraucisco at Sauta Barbaia, Cal., on Wednesday, resulted In her developing a speed of a littlo over half a knot lu excess of tho coutract requirements, 10 knots an hour. Tho premium to bo paid was $50,000 per quarter of a knot.
