Identification by IHousuruittont Said Novcr to Xnll. Chamber's Journal. A young man, who had been arrested ono morning for theft, was called up aud measured then and there. The process is carried out by two men, one of whom applies thcinstruments and calls out the figures, which are entered on a card by tho other, precisely as in a tailor's shop. Tho subject is barefooted and bare headed. The measurements are taken in four minutes, together with tho height standing, height sitting, tho length of the arm extended, tho length and breadth of the car. This fin ished, M. Bertillion, card in hand, interro gated tho prisoner: "What Is your name ?" "Albert Felix." "Have you ever been up beforo ?" "No, never." "Quito suno?" "Perfectly sure," with jaunty confidence. As the young scoundrel was the leader of a band, this seemed biahly improbable. Ho' was removed, and wo proceeded to tho search. Section after section of the drawers was rapidly eliminated by comparing tho fig ures ou them with thoso on M. Felix's card. At last we came to a singlo druwer, and then down to two cards. If ho was there at all, it must be one of these. A look at tho first at onco showed discrepancies of one or more mil limetres under some of tho headings, and, as the bony measurements are accurate to a mil limeter," it could not bo this one, There re mained ono card. M. Bertlllou took it up, hiding tho photograph on it. All the figures corresponded exactly with thoso just taken of Felix. Ho was recalled, and again questioned. Ho repeated his fonncr statements, but ob viously with less confidence. M. Bertillon uncovered tho photograph, and there tho fel low was to the life, and as ho stood that moment beforo us. It was most startling. But the original of the photograph was called Alfred Louis Lcmaric, and ho had been in jail two years before. Tho card bore details of certain scars and marks on hand and body; they corresponded exactly with thoso on Felix. Our friend, tho detective, edged up and watched tho prisoner with professional de light. Again questioned, Felix stuck to his story, but his composuro was gone, his eyo was troubled, his lips trembled and tho mus cles in his face twitched. The photograph was shown him. "Who is that ?" "Not me, somo one like mo" but very shakily. "This is Alfred Louis Lemalre, and he was arrested," etc. Tho fellow was down in an instant, us limp as wet paper. "OI, e'est mon nom,' adding, "I knew you would find It." Tho astonlslilng thing was that out of that great roomful of cards not a single ono corresponded, or anything llko corresponded with the measurements of tho youth beforo us except that particular ono his own. Mistake is impossible. . Why do I drink Tannhauser beer ? Because it's tho best in tho market.
