memorating tho crucifixion of tho
Saviour of mankind.- It is univers;
ally observed throughout Christen
dom, but with peouliar strictness in
purely Roman Catholic countries.
In sonic parts of England it is call
ed " Passion Friday," a name also
in use in Germany. There, how
ever, it is usually called " Still Fri
day," though " Black Friday " is a
name common over Southern Ger
many. " Holy Friday " is tho title
adopted in most of the Latin-derived
languages.
Further intelligence from Xoolau
is to the 6iTect that tho Chinaman,
named Ah Young, fired three shots,
night before last, at tho woman,
named Monika, two missing and the
last hitting her on the right side,
the ball being still in tho wound.
Yesterday p. m. Dr. Emerson, ac
companied by Deputy-Marshal Day
ton, went to Koolau to attend upon
tho wounded woman. After the
shooting, a native seized the China
man and tied him with a rope, but
the follow pretended to bo very ill,
so tho native untied him, whereupon
tho Chinaman grabbed a butcher
knife and stabbed the native, but
not dangerously, in the side, before
ho could be again secured. He said
he was ready to go to prison, and
that when he came put ho would
kill the woman and her whole
family. He has been living with
the woman, but unmarried. The
pistol is a self-cocking one, and was
secured.
