Bishop, which arrived front Kauai on Saturday, , brings intelligence of a tratrcdy that .recently occurred on that Island. It soems that some two years ago, two Chinamen ran away from a planta tion in Hanalci Distriot, and estab lishing themselves in a hut in the wilds of the Kalihi-wai mountains, seem to have got such a oharacter i for ferooity as to bo the torror of the district. A short time since, some women and children went up the valley to got mailo, but wore chased and ran for their lives from these two freebooters of tho mountain wilds. The inhabitants of tho wholo district have been kept in a state of fear by these fellows, and no ono ventured into the woods without arms. The general opinion among foreigners at Kauai, inoluding . Chinese, is that tho man who was Bhot was served rightly, being a Very bad and dangerous man. It is a significant fact that tho information of the whereabouts of tho desper adoes was given by two of their-own . countrymen, who, however, ouite characteristically, left before tho . trouble befran. ' ' By the kindness of Marshal Parko' '. wo are' permitted to make tho fol lowing extracts from a letter re - ceived by him giving the particulars: " On Sunday, tho 9th April, two Chinamen informed Naukana, Josia and Lupca that Ahing and Chunjr Gin, two ruuaway prisoners, wore up in the Kalihiwai Valley, and that they (the informers) would show them the way to the placo where they had built themselves a hut. Knowing tho men to bo bad and dangerous characters, they armed themselves with old guns, and tried to get a constablo to go with them, but could not find one, After tra veling over five miles up tho valley V tho two Cinnamon told them that the house was close to where' they then wore, and, as they did not wish to bo seen, left. Tho three natives proceeded and soon found tho hut. Naukana wont to tho doorway, which was coverod with a piece of bagging, and pulled it away; ho saw ' Ahinjr, who jumped up and hurled ,, a javelino at him, which struck his , .gun. iNaukana then covered him '" with his gun, and told ' him to bo quiet, that they would not hurt him, but Ahing hurled another javelino . at him which made two holes in his i'umner and grazed his skiu a little; io ttien seized a cano knife and, as 'y ho was coming, Naukana fired and " ''tho Chinaman fell dead." " Ahing's companion, Chung Gin, tried to run fro-n tho back of tho hut, butwas caught and is now'in irons."
