Webster and Burr.
Mr. Webster used to tell with
great rest nn incident in his profes
sional life, to illustrate how pnst
studies may prove of great service in
an emergency. While practicing in
New Hampshire, n blacksmith em
ployed him to defend u contested
will. Thu ease was such n compli
cated one that hi was obliged to
order books from Boston, tit the ex
pense of fifty dollars, in order to
acquaint himself with and to settle
the legal principlsc involved. He
won thu case, nnd, as the amount
involved was small, charged fifteen
dollars for services, mid was, there
foie laigcly out of pocket. Many
years after, when passing through
New York ho was consulted by
Arron Bun.
" I have n very perplexing case,"
said Mr. Burr, u which I cannot dis
entangle. "I knowl am right butsce
no way of proving it in court."
Mr. Webster listened, and found
the principles identical with his curly
case.
He stated them in such a lumin
ous way that Mr. Burr excited said,
" Have j'ou been consulted before
Mr. Webster?"
"No, sir; I never heard of the
case till you mentioned it."
u How is it possible that you
could unravel such a case at sight,
when I had given many hours of nnx
ious study to it in vain? "
Mr. Webster enjoyed his perplex
ity, but finally relieved him by a
statements of the facts. A great
sum was at stake, nnd Mr. AVcbster
received a fee of one thousand
dollars to balance his former loss.
The moral of this incident is that
whatever is worth doing is worth do
ing well. Mr. Webster, when a
young lawyer, acted on this maxim,
and this laid the- foundation of his
greatness as a lawyer.
Cheap Things' the Most
Nourishing.
Professor Atwator, of tho Agricul
tural College of Connecticut, has de
duced from tho various analyses nnd
investigations of chemists a tablo
illustrating the comparative nutritive
value of various species of fish, flesh
and fowl. Somo of its conclusions
will surpriso many persons, inasmuch
as they are direotly contrary to gener
ally reouived notions on the subject.
As a basis the Professor takes me
dium beef neither fat nor lean as
having a nutritive value of 100. He
puts fat pork at 1 16, smoked beef at
14G, smoked ham at 157, ordinary
beef at 01.3, mutton at 8G.6, buttor
at 124.1, cheese from skimmed milk
at 159, hens eggs at 72.2. In fresh
fish the highest place is given to
salmon, 107.9. Spanish mackerel aro
estimated at 105.9, bonod cod at 106
(above all frcbh fish, save salmon),
canned salmon at 107, and salted
mackerel at 111.1. Oysters sup
posed by many to be so nutritious,
at 21.8, and lobsters at 50.3. A
very satisfactory point in this esti
mate is that what is cheapest is the
most uotirshing. The exceptional
nutritive character of smoked and
dried preparations is due to tho evap
oration of moisture and compression
of tissue, Tho enormous amount of
nutriment in cheese explains tho vast
