Sho Wanted a Corset
A country girl entered a Jackson

ed by a clerk whether he could . be
of any ndvnntngo to her in breaking
tho monotony of the situation. She
gazed on tho fair-haired apostle of
the beautiful for a moment, and,
reaching down, drew a bundle from
under her arm, nnd said: ,,Wll,
here is a pair of shoes ttiat mother
sold eggs nnd buyed for me. But
I've learned .about girls being
squeezed to death with corsets, and
I want tcr swap these shoes for one

San Bernardino, Col., Mny 18th.'
The parlors of tho Stark's Hotel
were filled to overflowing with our
San Bernardino people last evening
by invitation and otherwise, to hear
a concert by telephone. The Trans
continental Hotel at Colton was the
other end of the wire.. Between
these points, three and a hnlf
miles apart, communication was es
tablished on Tuesday. At half-past
eight, Professor Stcinbrcinner, with
his orchestra, opened , the ceremony
with a lively air, which was plainly
heard in Colton. The Colton Quin
tette Club responded, the same be
ing .heard plainly here. Several
pieces were exchanged, and the eve
ning concert was pronounced a
success.
