What a Shark Swallowed. Tho following letter, written by one of tho otllccrs on the British bark " Lutterworth, : Whilo the "Lutterworth" was lying becalmed in tho tropics, a large shark was ob served swimming around the ship. A large hook with chain attached was baited witli a four-pound piece of pork. Tho shark mado for it and bolted it. In hauling him up the chain parted, and ho coolly swal lowed the hook, chain and pork. Another hook was then baited which he instantly seized, biting a three inch rope in twain, and also swallow ing it with another four pound piece of pork. Another hook was then baited w.ith a similar picccof pork, and with this the shark was caught and landed on our main deck. All hands cleared from him for he was in a terrible flutter. His tail was cut off with tho carpenter's axe, which quieted Mm a little.' Some said it was not the same shark we had hooked before. He was cut open, when we found the two large shark-hooks, chain and rope snugly coiled away, with eight pounds of pork, in his locker. It seems almost incredible, but ail hands aro witness to it. A Romantic Quest. A London hospital surgeon relates an incident which furnishes ample food for the fancy of novelist or playwright: A well-dressed, lady like woman, speaking with a French accent, requested a private inter view on a delicate subject. She stated that a young woman, a rela tive of hers, was entitled to some property if she were married, but would lose it if she remained single. Having no one in her eye, she was desirous of mnrrying any dying manf so that, having been legally united to him, she might obtain her property, without, at tho same time, being saddled with a husband. Hav ing failed in their efforts to accom plish this matter in Paris, they had come on a pilgrimage to London in search of a complacent moribund. The aforesaid house-surgeon w.as. re quested to find a suitable dying man, and if he were a widower with child ren, they offered to make a provision for them. The gentleman consulted declined to be a party to such a pro ceeding, but I conceive that a Bearch among the poorer parts of London, or anv larcre town, would sneftrlilvlin rewarded with success. Only it would be terribly awkward if the lhckenng lamp of tho bridegroom, instead of being extinguished, were to Mare up again ana burn steadily.
