Huxley, In speaking of tlic plngue
iu London, in 1061, and the Arc
which followed says, ' It would, I
fancy, have fared but ill with any
one who should have broached to
our ancestors the doctrine now pro
pounded to you, that all their hypo
theses were alike wrong, that the
plague was no more in their sense,
divine judgment, than the fire was
the work of any political, or religious
sect, but that they themselves were
the authors of both plague undjirc,
and that they must look to them
selves to prevent the recurrence of
calamities, to all appearance so pear
liarly beyond the reach of human
Wc have no reason to believe that
it is the improvement of our faith,
or our morals, which keeps the
plague from our city. Wc have
learned that pestilences will only
t'ako up their abode amongst those
who invite them, by having prepared
ill drained, ill ventilated, unswept,
and ungariiished residences for them,
streets, alleys, back slums, teeming
with foul accumulations of garbage.
Wc, in later times have learned
somewhat of nature, and partly obey
Because of this partial improve
ment of our natural knowledge, and
of that fractional obedience, we have
no plague amongst lis now.
But, how long is this immunity to
last? Is the sanitary state of Hono
lulu of 1882 any better than the
London it 1GG4?
The " stinging tree" of Queens
land is a luxurious shrub, pleasing
to tho eye but dangerous to the
touch. It grows from two or three
inches to tcu or fifteen feet in height,
and emits a disagreeable odor. Says
a traveler: " Sometimes while shoot
ing turkeys in the scrubs, I have
entirely forgotten the stinging tree
till I was warned of its close prox
imity by its smell, and have often
found myself in a little forest of
them. I was only once stung, and
that very lightly. Its effects are
curious ; it leaves no mark, but the
pain is maddening, and for month's
afterwards the part when touched is
tender in rainy weather, or when it
gets wet in washing. I have seen a
man, who treat ordinary pain lightly,
roll on tho ground in agony nfter
being stung, and I have known a
horse so completely mad after get
ting into a grove of the trees that he
nibhed open-mouthed at anyone who
approached him, and had to be shot.
Dogs, when stung, will rush about
whining piteously, biting pieces from
the nft'ectpd part."
Toilet Soaps, nine Mottled Soap,
jun received. Our toilet t-oaps are
beautiful and cheap, families would do
well to examine.
