'Have your renders over heard of
a passionate medicine-drinker ?
There are thousands of people who
love "not wisely, Imt too well," beer,
brandy, vyinc, or .else tlic.ucups.that
cheer, but not inebriate." 3ut
"(hitherto,- a person; passionately fond
of taking all sorts of medicines, has
not, 1 think, been found. An officer
of the Vieiuiii municipal disinfection
department, was dismissed front
service a few days ago, on account
of his excessive lovei of medicine.
This map's duty consisted in disin
fecting houses or rooms, where
patients ailccted by infectious dis
eases were lying, but ho "combined,"
us Horace says, "the useful and the
pleasant," by openly or surrepti
tiously pouring down his throat the
contents of all the medicine bottles
he ever could get hold of. A
curiously constructed throat nud
stomnch he must have, too! Fancy
anyone, swallowing half a dozen
varieties of' those nasty stuffs in one
day.! The imirmurs of numerous
patients, who had to pay with their
medicine for their disinfection, at
lust brought about the dismissal pf
the, queer fellow. I trust he may
succeed, in getting a situation at u
chemist's, or had 1 better draw the
Salvation Army's attention to this
pharmaceutical drunkard ?
I hear the most-alarming accounts,
from Brussels ancnt the new medium
or mesmerist, who has just arrived
from Norway. A small pale man,
Oshcstiorn's,.only peculiarity is his
light grcj' eyes, which have a fixed
stare that is rather embarrassing to
strangers., , If al one hears of this
person' lie' true, one would rather not
lind oneself in the same room with
him; ,his nieciitllte being that he
" wills" people to do all sortof im
possible things, simply by turning on
the pale' grey before mentioned. At
a' small party at hie Baron de Or 's
house the, other night, he did some
extraordinary things. One of the
guests laughed ironically at some of
M. Oshestiern's statements as to his
powers,' whereupon the mesmerist
walked up to the scoffer, placed a
finger on his forehead, and said,
' 3loiisieur, yous devenez idiot!'
Whereupon the 'subject' began to
dance, open his mouth, agitate his
elbows, and favor1 the company with
an idiotic stare. An ofllcer who ob
jected,) this, summary treatment' of
his friend, was made to bark, run on
nil fours, and, generally imitate can
ine untied. ' A ;yoimg- and lovely
Countess was atso ' willed ' to be
' have-hi a maimcrvr holly, unbecoming
a virtuous matron,- 'and altogether
the Baron de G 's guests had rather
a bud time. p
