MUSIC FOR WORKMEN.
A happy tiny will have dawned for
ttic 'laboring classes when it shall bo
recognized ns nn indisputable fact
that to get from a workman his best
work it is ncccsBary to feed him well,
clothe him well, lodge him well, and
piovidc him with agreeable enter
tainment while he is woiking. Pen
ding this too happy consummation,
steps ai;o already being taken in
Spain to amuse the workman during
his hours of toil ; and the plan is
said to have been attended by excel
lent results. "Structural alterations"
having been ordered for the Madrid
Theatres, ns (since the burning of
the Ring Theatre at Vienna) at so
many playhouses in various parts of
Europe, the nccessnry operations
were forthwith undertaken at the
Theatre Royal, but they did not
proceed rapidly enough to give the
.manager any hope of being able to
open on the day for which the com
mencement of the season bad been
fixed. In bis difficulty he selected
from a number of workmen those
who had a taste for music, and en
gaged a portion of the opera band to
piny to them ns they built, joined,
and, painted. Cheered by the strains
of n fine orchestra, the men labored
with such good-will that they com
pleted their work in excellent time.
And now according to the Epoca,
the question of employing music ns
an aid to labor is being seriously
considered in high 'places. Religion
is treated ns a pastime by the Salva
tion Army, and'whyfhot work? St.

CHRISTMAS AT -THE SOUTH IN WAR TIME.

made, it was enjoyable. Turkeys
were only $11 apiece, and salt had
fallen to 33 cents aj pound. The

cord ; wines were to be had by the
very rich, and "sorghum rum, or
apple, peach, or blackberry brandy
cost $80 a gallon. A few toys were
leftjjii the stores in the cities, and
liie:Ciackers, essential to the South
ern festival, were $5 a pack. By
18(53 the closest search of Santa
Clans revealed no plnythings, and
lire-crackers indicated great- wealth
or reckless extravagance. The few
turkeys in the market were $ 10, and
$50 apiece ; whisky or sorghum rum
"for egg nog cost $75 or $80 n
gallon; sugar was $5 and $10 a
pound, and flour $125 a barrel.
