PROGRESS.
Colonel Sprcckels has. on behalf
of the Oceanic Steamship Company,
entered into an arrangement with the
Government to bring to Honolulu
from 500 to 000 Chinese immigrant s,
every throe monllfs. ami more if
necessary, lie has pledged hinibelf
to charter good steamers, for the
purpusc, before two new ones,
which he proposes to order, can be
built. Hach steamer will carry one
or two good physicians ; the sanitary
aiTHiigemcnls will be of the first
clasi, passengers arc to be vacci
nated at the port of shipment and
every piecautiou will be taken to
prevent sickness. J his line ol
steamers is to be established as a
domestic Hawaiian line, trading
with Yokohama, Hongkong, San
Francisco and Honolulu. The com
pany will also run steamers between
Tahiti and Honolulu, and perhaps
in the event of the discontinuance of
the P. M. S. S. Co.'s service, with
Australia also.
The importance to Hawaii of the
'establishment of this commercial en
terprise, having Honolulu for its
central point, cannot lie over-estimated.
'We can safely leave the
selection of the steamers stud ihe cx
. edition of all the details in the hands
of the Oceanic Company, with the
full assurance that the inteiests of
Hawaiian? will be carefully consi
dered. The pioneer steamer of the
line will probably sail in January,
and it is not improbable that the
Mariposa will be placed in the Asia
tic trade. This agreement made be-
tween the Government and the O.S.
S. Cg. will necessitate the cessation
of the temporary arrangement made
with the P.M.S.S. Co.. who have
been duly notified to that eftect, and
who will not bring any more Chinese
laborers after the end of the present
year. A, the agents of the P.M.S.
S. Co. have at present no further
favors to receive from the Govern
i meat with respect to Chinese immi
gration, perhaps they will come for
ward and explain clearly the nature;
of that Five Dollars a Head trail-.

Cully, Mr.. S. M, Damon and Dr. 1J.
McKibbin were elected directors for
'the ensuing year.
l,',Mcssi. Notley, Hanson, Kinuers-

members.
Considerable discussion ensued as
,.1,0, the time at which the next show
should be held. Mr, Wright said
jthat he, preferred, to hoc the raw
'Holies and muscles of animals and
not see them when they were hog
fat! Mr. Jaeger objected to post
poning the meeting till October for
liejicnclit Of the planters as there
was only one exhibit of sugar at the

owing to the treaty, they were un

president tnotigtit tunc plan
ters might exhibit machinery and
live stock, and said that he was in
favor of holding Ihe next show in
May as How era, trail and vegetables
must also be considered. Mr.
AV right thought the best time would
bo in October, and, that as the plan--tors
were represented at the meeting,
their ideas "might be conformed to.
On motion it was resolved that the
board of management take into con
sideration the date on which the
next show' should be hold.
The question of a site was also
referred to the board of manage
ment. Mr. Jaeger recommending
members to keep their eyes and cars
open, and endeavor to find a sui

the last meeting from men who
could get away from business, for a
short time, during luncheon hours.

The Australians appear to be
growing restive under the rule of
England. Uecently the commander
of the British, man-of-war Nelson has
felt called upon to compel several
Australian captains to take down the
flag which had been adopted by the
qplony and hoist in its stead the
British ensign. His grbtuu is tho
similarity between the colonial flag
and the ensign used by English men-of-war;
but it is evident that the
Australians do not regard this ex
planation as very plausible. The
query that arises is: How much
longer can England control colonies
which derive few or no advantages
