FORT STREET SCHOOL.
We found room two in charge of
Mrs. Hendry, 'who kindly provided
ns with seuts and inquired our
wishes. Her pupils, twenty-flvo in
number, are in the sixth grade and
in their sixth year at the school.
The room was better lighted than
that of the principal. The class
was receiving instruction in language
from Swinton's grammar. The les
son, which was on the. subject of
. adverbs, was partially read from the
books, the examples, given therein,
being explained by the pupils, or by
the teacher in case of their failure of
comprehension. The meaning of the
word "conjunctive" was known by
the class, yet they did not know the
meaning of the word "adverb,"
which was asked them at our request,
as the lesson was on the subject of
., .adverbs. The teacher stated that
v". she had "a system of reviews," by
i .which she " mingled one lesson with
another," and, if her class had "for-
'gotten any particular work," she
(made them "go back." Questions
' were asked concerning the pronouns,
the class showing by their answers a
knowledge of their different uses,
..with the exception of the pronoun
"thou," which is not referred to in
; the text book, and which the class
said was " used in quotations."
, Swinton's Fourth Reader and the
' " Golden Book of Choice Reading"
y ' were in use, the latter in selecting
sentences for dictation. There is
but. little geography taugbt to the
ixth grade, as they are supposed to
finish it the previous year. No in
struction is given in music and
singing, the teacher saying that she
"knew nothing of them" hSrself,
,and that people who devote them
selves entirely to the study of these
branches " can't study a common
school education," they " can't do
tboth together." She did not be
lieve in children " learning languages
till they understood their own."
Some questions in arithmetic were
worked correctly, and the bell an
nounced the joyful news that it was
: twelve o'clock. The class marched
out in an orderly manner. . This is
the only room in the school which
? contains but one grade..

asked them, and a few failed to give
ji-a satisfactory reply, but that of S.
iBeckley was very clepr. Thomp
son's practical arithmetic was in use ;

leaving her room, the pupils " were
supposed to bo ready for fractions,'
but they had to bo " pushed up."
".No singing or drawing" was
taught, as there was "no time on ac
count of her having two grades in
her room." Spelling is learnt by
the pupils writing, on the black
board, words that occur in their
daily lessons, all the syllables being
separated. Though we differed from
the teacher in the division of some
' syllables, sho upheld her reasons for
her method of instruction by quot
ing authorities no spelling book
was used. Swinton's grammar had
been introduced "in Mr. Atkinson's
time," at her request.
We were then shown some of the
original compositions of the class,
and kindly allowed to retain two.
One of these written by a boy, who
only left Norway two years aqo, is
publishedbclow, and we think, con
sidering the short time he has been
instructed in the English language,
that it is highly creditable to, him :
BASE BALL.
Base ball is-oneof the finest games
in the 'world. It is an American
game. There were two games
played between the Honolulu and
Maui base ball club. I went to see
them. There are three bases ; first,
second, and third. It is generally
nine boys who play, one at each
base, one pitch the ball another
catch it, and about four boys which
wait to strike. When he strike, he
run to the first base. If the ball
gels there before the boy, he is out
and have to go to the third base,
but if the boy gets there before ball
he waits there till he cau get another
chance, and then he runs to the
second base and waits for another
chance to'run to third base and so
ou ; this is the way the boys play it.
I have seen men play it different. I
don't know how men play it because
I have only seen them do it once.

A CURIOUS ACCOUNT.
Mr. A. Jaeger was, on Monday,
the recipient of a box of icili wili
seeds which he had ordered to he
obtained for tiim, and which thrive
in dry localities. The account for
warded, for the expenses incurred,
is such a curiosity that Mr. Jaeger
has kindly allowed us to publish it.
