FRIDAY, l-'EU. S, 1881.
Tlio graduation of another class
from the Training School for Nurses,
attached to Uellovuo Hospital, adds
twenty-seven iccruils to a corps of
professional ntlciiihinls whose bcr
viccs are iu constant demand. A
large proportion of the graduates of
tins and of the two other training
schools in this city immediately join
an association of trained nurses, and
obtain constant employment at the
rate of twenty or even thirty dollars
a week, with hoard. This is one of
the best remunerated occupations
now open to women who are forced
to support themselves. Twelve years
ago a prejudice against hospital
trained nurses was entertained in
medical circles. It was argued that
a little knowledge of medicine and
surgery would prove a dangerous
tiling, that the trained nurse would
assume to know more than the
physician in attendance, and that her
presence in the sick-room would he
a source of vexatious controversy
and annoyance. The prejudice was
speedily dispelled. The trained nurse
having formed iu the hospital the
habit of implicit obedience to her
superior's orders, was found to be
more disposed to follow medical in
structions than the old-fashioned
nurse. The educated nurse knew
her limitations, and disliked to act
on her own responsibility. The
half-educated or ignorant nurse did
not know how insignificant was her
own knowledge, and was always in
hot haste to get ahead of the doctor,
and to convince him that lie did not
know what he was about. The best
physicians iu large cities now wel
come the presence of a hospital nurse
in the sick-room. It assures them
that there Avill be no lack of vigi
lance and intelligent care in the
nursing, and that their own direc
tions will be rigidly followed. S. 7'"1.
The serpentine Sarah has now only
herself to thank if her name is in
everyone's mouth in connection with
a fresh scandal. A third-rate actress,
probably jealous of the great trage
dian's fame, writes a scurrilous book
about her, which also has the draw
back of being dull. The book re
poses gracefully for a -week in shop
windows and on booWlcrs' shelves,
from which retreat it is safe to say
the volume might have passed, uncut
and unnoticed, to the vast regions of
waste paper. But, unfortunately for
all concerned iu this business, Mdmc,
Bernhardt reads the book, and
promptly proceeds, armed with a
dagger, a whip, and I know not what,
to wreak vengeance on her trnducer
with her own fair hands. A pretty
scuttle ensued. Mile. Marie Coloin
bier, probably thinking discretion the
better part of valor, reheat hastily
into another room, and hides behind
the curtains, while Sarah, deluded of
her prey, wreaks her vengeance on
the defaulting lady's gowns and frills,
which were somewhat badly treated
by Fedora's dagger! "What a piece
of feminine vengeance! Fnable to
plunge the poiguard into her etilm
niator's bosom, she rends in twain a
1,000-franc costume. I think the
famous vol.v V or must have
sounded a liille shrill during this
curious scene, which lias had, as
a result, several challenges to mortal
combat by the unfortunate man
mixed up iu the affair. And the
end of it all is that a stupid and
scandalous book is the rage of the
hour, and the whole atfair has added
a new zest to existence. Lift.
