The Rev. G. S. Mead, of Trinity
School, San Francisco, leaves by the
Mariposa. This gentleman has been
the guest of the Rev. Geo. Wallace,
and during his brief stay has made
many friends. We wish him a pleas
ant voyage and a safe return.
Noltk's horse got frightened this
morning at some large barrels that
were being rolled on the sidewalk,
and gave quite a free exhibition of
his dancing abilities. Capt. Aldrich
of the Honolulu Rifles finally brought
him down to "stand at ease."
Mit. J. M. Herring lias com
menced business on his own account
at 81 Hotel Street, as a jeweller and
watchmaker. When we say that Mr.
Herring was foreman many years
with the late Win, Wenner, it is a
sufficient guarantee that his work
will be of the very best description.
Mis. Gibson got up in the House,
Saturday, to make a speech on the
subsidy bill, but the members hav
ing got so sick of his illogical
harangues, gradually left the house
untill no quorum was present, so lie
had to be content with just moving
the previous question.

Such was the character, such the
life, and such the death of Mary
Eva, the beloved wife of Henry K.
Passenger, who, on the Cth instant,
yielded up her spirit to Iliui who
gave it. Her tidy and pleasant little
cottage home was at the entrance of
Pauoa Valley, whore the sweet influ
ence of her gentle nature soothed
and gladdened the hearts of her
devoted husband and fond father-in-law.
Not long had that locality
known her presence, not long had
she been a dweller in the mild
climate of the Hawaiian Islands.
About a year ago she came here
from beyond the sea, a young bride,
animated with life and happiness
and hopu. Her stay was short: her
expectations, so far as they related
to earth, were destined to early dis
appointment ; but her hopes beyond
.the grave were strongest and clear
est when the dark shadows of the
valley of death began to gather
around her, as "the stars shine
brightest before the break of day."
To a lady friend she had spoken
with glowing delight of the joyous
