Two kanakas and two icahincs
were charged in the Police Com I
this morning with disturbing the
quiet of the night, by uproarious
conduct. They were each fined S5
and costs.
Mit. E. P. Adams sold at noon the
wreck of the schooner Ehukai, as it
now lies upon the reef at Kacn.i
point; also the boat, sails, boom,
etc. The whole was sold to Mr.
James Dower for $158.

the news was scarce, on'ts back as

as he said, "O curse, I have been

Tin: T". M. C. A. Prospectus is
the title of a copious circular issued
by tho General Secretary of the As
sociation. It gives an extensive pro
gramme of work cut out for mem
bers, and of gatherings to bo held
periodically under tho auspices of
tho society.
Oaiiu College and Punahou Pre
paratory School rc-open on Monday
next. Miss Spooncr, a graduate of
Mount Holyokc, has been added to
the staff, and Miss Hall, from Ware,
Mass, takes charge of tho Prepara
tory school. Application should bo
made for admittance to the Rev. C.
M. Hyde D. I)., or to the Rev. W.
C. Merritt.
Tin: Strangers Friend Society had
a very pleasant gathering yesterday
at tho residence of Rev. Alex.
Mackintosh, Nuuaiiu Valley. A
business meeting was held in tho
afternoon at -1 o'clock, at which
live new members wero elected, and
it was voted to extend aid to several
per urn in town nci'iling it At 7
o'clock the gentlemen attended, and
all sat down to a very sumptuous
repast, Ihu remainder of the evening
passing pleasantly with some
excellent music and social Inter
count'. The whole affair was a
great success from beginning to
end.
Tin: appointment of Miss Lulu
Moore as vice-principal of IhoHoyal
school is a very satisfactory one.
We congratulate the principal, Ilcv.
Alex. Mackintosh, on having such
an able assistant.
Two Chinese boys attending the
Chinese school were brought up this
morning charged witli trueney by
their teacher, Lcong Man. The
ease was not proven, and dismissed,
the teacher having to pay the costs?.').
Tin: Ladies' Henevolcnt Society
held their regular monthly sociable
last evening, at tho vestry of the
Fort Street Church. The attendance
was large and tho evening was passed
very pleasantly. Some excellent re
freshments were handed round.
Mit. Dan Lyons selected yester
day from Lycan & Co., for the
branch hospital at Kakaako, a very
fine reed organ for SI. 50. It was
placed in position this morning and
will be of great use at that institu
tion. Ir the local man of the 'Tiser
would go out to. Palama, he would
find there was. no occasion for his
remarks about Ihu condition of tho
Palama road. Tho Konil Supervisor
is hard at work in that direction,
and will soon have the necessary
lepairs completed.
Two young boys suspected of
being lepcis were brought to the
Police Station this morning, from
somewhere, on the Nuuami Valley
road. Dr. G. W. Paikcr, Secretary
of the Hoaid of Health, examined
them at noon, and ordered Ihcin to
be sent to the Branch Hospital at
Kakaako.
Wi: understand that the congrega
tion of tho Bethel Union Church have
iu contemplation tho erection of a
new church edifice. It is supposed
that the matter will he brought be
fore the people at an caily day. The
present building is inadequate for
the present wants, and no doubt a
church would be erected in the latest
style and be an ornament to the city.

A MKivmn of the Hoard of Edu
cation was held yesterday forenoon.
Miss Lulu Moore was appointed
Vice-principal of the Hoyal School.
Mrs. A. Altaian, late of New York,
was appointed an assistant at Kauc
ohe School. The Lahainaluna Semi
nary will have two nuw teachers,
Mr. Frank Hcckwith, son of Dr. E.
G. Hcckwith, as first assistant, and
Mr. Hardy as second assistant in
place of Mr. Atwater. The Hon.
J. W.Smith, Secretary of the Hoard,
states that in a short time several
new English schools will be opened
outside of Honolulu, and several
new schools will be built.

American troops have broken up
the colonies of squatters that tried
to possess the land in Indian Terri
lorj Among the confiscated prop
erty at one camp was a stub-book of
eertilleates of membership, show
ing tho issuanco of 1,887 eertilleates
at $5 each. A great many of the
"Roomers," as the colonists are
called, were victimized into the
enterprise.
Lieutenant Grccly, the Arctic ex
plorer, was sick in Montreal the last
of August. Ho went there to visit
the great Scientific Congress of
Great 15 ri lain and the United Stales.
The election campaign iu Indiana
was opened on August JiOtli by both
parties. Governor Hendricks de
livered an able speech at Indianapo
lis, in which he stood squarely up
for a "tariff for rovenue only" in
other words, free trade against protection.
