Tin: S. S. City of Tokio will leave
San Francisco, February 20th, and
arrive here about March 7th for the
purpose of taking Consul Irwin back
to Japan. His wife and family will
remain in the islands several months.
At the Bethel Union Church, Sun
day morning next, the Rev. E. C.
Oggcl, pastor, will preach a memor
ial sermon for the late Father
Damon, that day being the seventi
cth.anniversary of his birth.

nor D. de Vivo is in communication
with George Augustus Sala, for tho

Commissioner Major Jas. II. Wotlc-
house received the sad news of the
death of his mother, the Eatty Jane
WodeUouse, which took place at
South Lowestoft, Suffolk, England,
January 10th.

A despatch from Melbourne dated
Jan. 21st states that the Command
er of the Australian squadron has
hoisted the British Hag over the
Louissades, Woodlark, Huron and
Enlrectsteaux Islands, lying off the
eastern point of New-Guinea.

101, who ran into Prof. Scott's
horse Saturday, rather badly injur
ing it, was brought up this morning
and charged with heedless driving.
His Honor fined him 810 with costs
and cancelled his license.
Tin: regular monthly meeting of
Engine Co. No. 1 was held last
evening with a good attendance of
members. Robert More was elected
foreman in tho place of the late
George II. Fassctt, and Louis Tous
sant was elected first assistant fore

Tintin: Chinaman were caught lust
week on Molokai distilling okolehao.
All their apparatus was seized and a
demijohn full of the liquor, which
filled thirteen bottles. They were
each fined $50. Two paid their
fines, while tho other was brought to
Honolulu this morning to work out
his fine.
In the middle of the road in Nuu
anu Valley, near the first bridge, is
a largo stone standing up some two
or three inches. Wo have uotlced
several horses stumble at it. If the
Road Supervisor would just tako up
his axe and shovel he could soon fix
it, or perhaps oue or two kicks from
his No. 12 boots would be sulllcient.
Mr.Nis. Gilnlmuin & Co. have just
received n small lot of French claret ,
of oxtrn quality.
Tin; P. M. S. S. Xcahtndla will
bo duo on Sunday afternoon from
the Colonics, en route for San Fran
cisco. How about that band conceit for
tho Japanese immigrants? It would
delight them to hear our magnificent

Mr. E. P. Adnms will sell the whole

number of strangers who arrived by
the Mariposa, and they wero de
lighted with the playing of the baud.

lulu Fire Department will take place
on Thursday morning. Tho several
companies arc requested to assemble
in the square opposite Mechanic
Engine Co. No. 2 house, at 1) :30
o'clock in full uniform. The line of
march will be found in another
column.
Tnu mail received at the Post Of
fice yesterday by the Mariposa, num
bered 27 bags, with 5,515 letters and
G,G90 papers. Tnat despatched by
the Tokio for San Francisco com
prised five bags, 1,159 letters and
403 papers, most of which were de
posited during Monday.
On January 21st the directors of
the Pacific Mail Steamship Company
declared a dividend of 1 per cent,
payable on February 2nd. The
statement of the Pacific Mail Com
pany for the past quarter shows that
the gross earnings were 81,314,000;
operating expenses, $770,000; net
earnings, 8544,000; cash on hand,
$508,805.
Oi'riciuis Mchrtcns and Fclhbchr
searched the steam tug Alert yester
day soon after her arrival in port.
They did not find anything at that
time, but a little later on they ar
rested a fireman, J. Bonnet, as he was
leaving the tug, with eight tins of
opium iu his possession. He was
brought up this morning and re
manded until Wednesday.
Mn. J. W. IIikgluy, so well known
as the late proprietor of the Pioneer
Cigar Manufactory, has opened a
store at 8 1 King street, where he
will be glad to sec all his old patrons
and new ones too. He keeps a large
assortment of genuine imported
Havana and Manila cigars, and
different brands of the finest domes
tic cigars. Smokers will find cigar

Cou.ncTOit-Gcncral laukea, of tho
Custom House, instructed liisofflccrs
to search the Mariposa for opium
yesterday. They wero rewarded by
getting 41 tins. Twenty-four wero
found in tho false bottom of a trunk
owned by a Chinese fireman, Ah
Yip, who was taken before Justico
Bickerton this morning and remanded
for further examination. yilio owners
of the other tins have not yet called
for their property.
Tiik tug Alert from San Fran
cisco arrived in port yesterday after
noon about ten minutes before five
o'clock, and docked at the old cus
tom house wharf. His Majesty tho
King, accompanied by His Ex. tho
Attorney-General, went out into the
channel and boarded her. A largo
number visited her, and all came to
the Bauie conclusion that she is a
very powenul boat nnu a iieciucu
acquisition to this port. She was
built about two years ago. It is
probable her name will bo changed.
The trip from San Francisco wns
made in just 15 days.
Mn. Smith, late of San Francisco,
is about to introduce to the people
of this city n novelty iu tho way of
recreation, known as the roller
coaster. It is an inclosed track
running in a circular form and
standing at an anglo of about 45

Lauot. numbers of people visit the
Immigration Depot every hour of

arrived Japs. To-day, Mr. F. II.
Ilayseldcn is acknowledging their
contracts, assisted by Mr. W. O.
Atwatcr, who represents the Board
of Immigration. It is not likely
that any will bo shipped this week.
Consul Irwin spends a deal of his
time at tiio depot looking after the
welfare of the people he has brought
to these shores. Yesterday after
noon quite a number of the Japs gave
an exhibition of the wrestling powers
for which they arc noted. It was
indeed n rare treat to those fortu
nate enough to be present.
