A VISIT.
After about eleven weeks of al
most unbroken fine weather, wc are
waited upon, to-day, by the Naiads
in force. Last night's gale, too,
waked up many n sleeper to sage
and solid reflection. It recalled
early life to hundicds of the inhabi
tants of this city. It lcminded them
of years and the localities far back
and away over the rolling wave. To
persons who have been accustomed
to consider an occasional storm, say
over a week, an absolute certainty,
the fino weather, here, was becoming
almost monotonous. A storm is to
them a sort of new, and not alto
gether unwelcome sensation. The
disagreeable part of this visit from
the rougher elements will be partly
compensated for, if it brings the
occupants of the intcr-occan homes
of Hawaii to realize more fully than
tliQy did before that here tho ele
ments arc generally kinder than per
haps in any other latitude under the
sun.
DIVERSIFIED INDUSTRIES.
Wherever commerce is established
on' a solid basis, and is attaining
colossal proportions, it will be found
that industry is not confined to one
or two lines of production. An end
lessvariety of occupations character
izes all successful commercial com
munitic. One enterprise suggests
another, and creates the necessity
for it. A limited number of enter
prises, instead of reducing the risks
of failures, only increases them.
The resources of the country need
to be all worked together, so as to
be mutually helpful. When labor
is divided up among a great variety
of productive occupations, the coun
try, as a whole, does not suffer
seriously under the failure of a
single crop, or any one line of enter
prise. The tremendous develop
ment of trade in the United States
of America is due, in a great
measure, to the endless variety and
inexhaustible quantity of the coun
try's resources, and these being
diligently developed by the people.
The terrible Irish famine of '47
whould never have occurred had not
the country depended on the potato
crops alone, from ygar to year, as
the main-stay of the people's sub
sistence. Since that time, the Iiish
farmer has diversified crops, and
the more diversified they continue
to be, the less will be the danger
of a recurrence of such a calamity
as that referred to. The islands of
the Hawaiian group derive a large
proportion of their trade from the
sugar plantations. As the sugar
vane points, so the people arc accus
tomed to sec the variations in the con
dition and prospects of trade. How
the fall in prices of sugar, last year,
threw a wet blanket over every line
of business in this city is only too
well known. That these' islands
are capable of yielding a large
variety of marketable products is
a pretty well established fact.
"While the cane crops arc good, and
times moderately brisk under the
inspiration of sugar dividends, sugar
will probably continue to monopo
lize tho attention of land-owners;
butshoulri si general failure occur,
in tho sugar crop, but for one sea
son, and sill crops arc liable to acci
dents of that bort, the results would
bo as far-reaching sis disastrous.
Hut when the thousands of acres of
unimproved lands are turned in to
other crops, the prosperity of the
country is doubly a&sured, inns-

failuro in one crop, tho losses arc
counterbalanced by profits from
other productions of the soil.
