IIMTi: STATUS.
Mormons are making reprisals in
Salt Lake City, by having promi
nent Gentiles prosecuted for lewd
ness. Some of the accused allege
that the movement is a put-up job,
harlots having been impoited to
swear misconduct against them.
On the 22nd Nov. Prof. Baldwin
and Frank Monroe competed in
wire-walking between the Cliff
House and Seal Rock, at the Golden
Gate. Monroe walked 300 feet and
returned in 12 minutes and 38 sec
onds. The Professor won the con
test by doing it in 10 minutes and
20 seconds.
Senator "William Sharon died Nov.
18th, in San Francisco, in the sixty
fifth year of his age.
Hugh M. Brooks, known as Walter
II. Lennox Maxwell, pleaded not
guilty at St. Louis to the indictment
charging him with killing C. Arthur
Prellcr.
Horace B. Claflin, the New York
millionaire dry goods merchant, is
dead at the age of seventy-four. R.
M. Pomeroy, a wealthy Bostonian,
who built the Central Branch of tho
Union Pacific Railway, has also
died, aged seventy.
Mr.'Menocal, 0. E., of the U. S.
Navy, has reported upon the Nica
ragua Canal. He recommends a
great enlargement on previous esti
mates, in order to provide for the
unrestricted passage of the largest
vessels and traffic of not less than
12,000,000 tons a year.
The Atlantic and Pacific Railway's
first through train was greeted with
joyful demonstrations, along the
line of the California Southern, on
the lGthinst.

EXECUTION OK MCI..
Louis David Riel was hanged at
the barracks of the mounted police,
near Regina, Northwest Territory,
for treason against the Queen of
Great Britain, at 8 :23 o'clock on
the morning of Nov. 16th. The
execution was performed with de
corum and despatch, in presence of
not more than twenty spectators.
Riel made no speech, in accordance
with the advice of the two priests
attending him. His manner was
composed in approaching his doom,
nnd he died without a struggle.
An alarming state of excitement
has been created among tho French
Canadian people of the Dominion,
by the execution of Riel in spite of
their petitions and protests. Mont
real and Quebec streets were par
aded by indignantsympathizers with
the dead man, on the evening fol
lowing the execution, while exten
sive precautions had to be adopted
to preserve the common peace. A
mass meeting to denounce the action
of the Government was held in
Montreal on the 22nd. It was at
tended by ten thousand people, and
addressed by 30 or -10 speakers.
From three platforms, erected for
the occasion, the French flag was
displayed, and the speeches were of
an inflammatory nature. The Pre
mier, Sir John Macdonald's, elllgy
was burned on Victoria Square, in
front of Queen Victoria's statue,
that object being blackened by the
smoke.
It is regarded certain that the
event has sealed the fate of the
Conservative Government. Almost
equally certain is it that Ricl's es
cape from the gallows would have
lost the Government tho English
Province of Ontario.

Sir John Macdonald left on tho
20th inst. for London. His mis
sion is to confer with the Imperial
authorities respecting a fishery and
possibly a reciprocity treaty between
the United States and Canada ; also,
with regard to the transit of British
mails to Eastern Asia and other
points via the Canadian Pacific
Railway.
Tho entire adult population of
Sainte Martha Tillage, Quebec,
voluntarily asseuibled in church
oaNov. 21st, and pledged tuen
selves to abstain from alcoholic
beverages for one year, Tlioro
are
2,000 people in the village.
Tho flrat through freight on the
Canadian Pacific Railway consisted
chiefly of navy material from Eng
land, and it made tho time, from
London to Victoria, of sixteen dajp.
There will be no regular through
traffic before next spring.

Gen. Brierc do Lisle, recalled
from the command in Tonquin, ar
rived in Paris Nov. 22nd. He re
fused to be interviewed. Officers
accomnanvinc him declare that bis
disgrace is unjust and that his re
moval has caused discontent in the
army. They say that the strength
of the troops in Tonquin continues
to be sapped by disease and the re
peated alarms by the enemy.
A despatch from Pckin says that
all difficulty between France and
China has been removed, and that
negotiations between the two na
tions have been resumed.
It is reported that the Govern
ment has resolved to terminate the
Madagascar expedition.
M. De Lesseps celebrated his
eightieth birthday, Nov. 19th. He
was confident that lie would live to
sail through the Panama Canal, and
expected soon to start for Panama
to inspect the work.
GERMANY.
The Reichstag opened Nov. 19th.
In his speech the Emperor expressed
strong hopes that Germany's efforts
to preserve peace would succeed.
Among matters indicated for legis
lation were increased grants to the
army and navy, the extension of
the accident insurance law, and the
making of a canal connecting the
Baltic sea with the river Elbe and
the Noitli sea. Negotiations were
mentioned as proceeding with Eng
land, Spain, France, Portugal and
Zanzibar regarding the extent to
which the German transoceanic es
tablishments and acquisitions will
henceforth be placed under the im
mediate protection or supervision of
the German Empire.
The London Standard distrusts
Emperor William's hopes of peace,
and urges him to speak regarding
the intentions of Austria and Russia.
King Alfonso of Spain is ill of
hereditary scrofula, and his early
death is anticipated. '
GREAT BRITAIN.
The Bank of England has raised
its rate of discount.
The political conflict is raging.
Mr. Parnell is standing for a Liver
pool constituency, and has issued a
manifesto urging the electorate to
refuse to again entrust the Liberals
with power. Most of the Liberal
papers of London pass the manifesto
without notice, while the Conserva
tive papers discuss it slightingly.
Mr. Gladstone lcpiied to the docu
ment in a chaffing way.

A despatch from Calcutta says
that 5,000 people have been
drowned and 150 villages sub
merged in Orissa by a cyclone, and
that 1,241 square miles in the
Moorohcdabad and Iludda districts
have heen devastated.
The British steamship Iberian,
from Boston for Liverpool, went
ashore in Dunmanus Bay, south
west of Ireland, with a cargo
valued at a million and a half
dollars, and was likely to become a
total wreck.
A terrible cyclone swept over the
Phillippino Islands Nov. 20th. Eight
thousand buildings, including num
erous churches and school houses,
wero destroyed and twenty-two per
sons were killed.
M. Dc Brazua, African explorer,
was given an ovation on arriving at
Paris lately. lie said that the com
merce of the Congo region required
the building of a railroad for its
accommodation.
A report that natives of Fly
River murdered all tho members of
tho Sydney Geographical Associa
tion's expedition in New Guinea, is
denied by advices from Melbourne.
