The Advertiser has a practice,
when it Unds occasion of dispute
with an individual contemporary, of
including all the other papers in
town. This is probably intended to
increase the magnitude of its own
effort in the eyes of its readers. It
is, however, rather 11 small device,
dishonest us well as paltry. A case
in point is that of the captain who
was dealt with at Hilo for importing
opium on his stoie list. This paper
was the first to "ive the very inter.
esting piece of news, but only gave
it as news, showing 110 sympathy for
the person who came into collision
with the law of the country. Yet
the Advertiser talks this morning ns
if all the other local papers were
seething with an agitation against
the tieatuicnt accorded to the captain
of the schooner Excelsior. So far
as this paper is concerned, no opin
ion lias yet been ventured upon the
case. Not that there was no occa
sion for discussion, as the scrape
Captain I'iltz got into would lend
itself readily to pointing a moral or
adorning a tale for the benefit of
other skippers, but being informed
at the outset that he had adopted
the role of injured innocence and
was going to put the ease in the
hands of his country's representa
tive, we considered that it would be
as serious a breach of propriety for
a newspaper to discuss the case at
that stago as to argue the merits of
a case pending in the Supreme Com t.
Our contemporaries do not seem to
Tegard the matter in that light, how
ever, but none of them has any right
to drag unoffending papers into the
Another gross offense is repeated
in the Advertiser's article to-day,
from its former discussions of the
general question of the opium traflle.
Jt reiterates the insinuation that the
backers of the anti-opium views of
its contemporaries are themselves
smugglers of opium. Theie is,
however, a conspicuous weakening
in the manner of uttering the innu
endo, which only makes the impro
priety more despicable. A shoit
while ago our contemporary was
holdly threatening to expose the
persons it alleged to be guilty of
Kiwdi nefarious liVDOCiisv. Dared
to make good its threat, the Adver
tiser became discreetly silent on the
subject ; but now it ventures forth
surain with the insinuation in a
diluted form. "It is" only "com-
-mori rumor," now, "that ninny of
those who arc loud in their denun
ciation of legalized opium traflle up
on 'moral grounds' arc participants
in the profits of the contraband or
illegal tralllc in that drug." Before,
jt apparently had a list of the
double-dealing characters, duly at
tested, ready to unfold to the gaze
of n scandalized community. At
present, the record is abroad on
the wings of "common rumor," the
Bame bird that within the past few
days has flown away several times
with the present Ministry. If the
Advertiser can name a single person
who is professedly opposed to licens
ing opium, yet at the same time a
participant in the illegal prollts of
the drug, then honesty, fnirplny
and regat d for the good name of
the community should induce it
cither to expose the guilty one or
else refrain from uttering insinua
tions that the masses will take the
liberty of applying to any and
every person against whom they
jnay entertain a grudge or harbor a
prejudice. Our contemporary's
course in this matter cannot be
ntberwlse than deinoializing to the
community, tho evil
able therefrom being so readily
imaginable that they need not bo
EDITORIAL NOTES. .
The bote in Saturday's itstio, say
lug Hint a steamer appeared on the
Post-ofllcc time table of mail de
partures for the Coast on the 27th
nit., was n mistake. The Government
is exonerated ; the country 13 safe,
and the Bulletin is glad.
If the law against carrying con
cealed weapons was permitted to be
a dcud letter in London, as it is in
too many other cities of civilization,
the results of the recent formidable
riot would have been too terrible to
contemplate. The fact of a mob
numbering a hundred thousand,
divided into quarrelsome factions,
having its sweet will in the lieail of
the metropolis for several hours,
without loss of life resulting, forms
a grand testimony to the wisdom of
strictly prohibiting men from going
about as walking arsenals, always
ready to bo the avengers of their
own wrongs, great or little.
Donald Crawford has been granted
a divorce against his wife in London,
on the ground of adultery with Sir
Lhailes Dilkc. The confession of
Crawford's .wife was the only testi
mony adduced, no proceedings hav
ing been taken against Dilkc. From
the tenor of the judge's charge,
that held no doubt of the commis
sion of the crime, and the Attorney
General's excuse for not putting Sir
Charles in the witness-box namely,
"that his cross-examination would
be on the indiscretions in life from
which no man is free," it looks as if
a judicial scandal had been added
to the revelations of a most deplor
able state of English society. The
famous Radical politician's reputa
tion is ruined, perhaps beyond re
trieve. A. L. OF II.
