and others had been sent from tho

worked with tremendous energy and
enthusiasm, and their splendid order
and discipline caused their efforts to

were engaged, results weio at onco

THE NEED OF THE HOUR.
Eunoit Bullktik: Honolulu has
been visited by lire n destructive but
cleansing. A largo pait of the ir
redeemably unsanitary district of
tho town has been lazed to the
ground anil made sweet and clean.
Now is the opportunity for a
radical reform in the sanitary ar
rangements of that part of the town
that has never before offered and
may never offer again. Not to use
tho present opportunity would be
almost criminal neglect, and should
the men who form tho present gov
ernment as incompetent and unlit to
hold authority. Blame, too, show
not bo withheld from the community
if it does not take step3 to suggest,
anil demand if need be, such
changes and reforms us arc called
for.
What are theso reforms? 1st.
t Certain streets should bo opened
"a; where none have been before; for
' example, Hotel street should be run
out to the water and beyond. The
nccesary survoys should not bo de
layed an hour longer than possible.
2nd. No building should bo al
lowed on the burnt district until
these surveys have been made and
the necessary streets have been
marked out.
3rd. Buildings on the burnt dis
trict should bo allowed to be put up
only in accordance- with certain
regulations which should be issued
us soon as possible by the Minister
of the Interior.
Let Honolulu but use its present
great opportunity and it may emerge
from this disaster, which has brought
distress and ruin to so many, im
proved, rejuvenated, cleansed a
sweeter, healthier and more sani
tary town than it can ever pretend
to have been before. E.
