PERTINENT QUESTIONS.
The Knimiloa being nearly ready
for sea, one or two questions sug
gest themselves to our mind as being
in order. The captain and princi
pal oificers have been appointed,
commissioned, and uniformed; but
has u doctor been provided, or is it
the intention to provide one? It
would scarcely be the correct thing
to Bend the vessel bo fur away as it
is supposed she is intended to go,
without a medical olllccr on board.
Then, is it intended to have a
schoolmaster? In a training ship,
with n lot of young boys, a teacher
is an indispensable necessity. To
climb rigging, furl sails, and learn
the various branches of work apper
taining to a sailor's vocation, should
not constitute the &olc occupation of
those boys. To neglect provision
for their mental and moral training,
would bo n flagrant omission. It
may be the intention to have botli a
doctor and an instructor on board
before the Kaimiloa starts on her
voyage to Samoa; but as neither
has yet been appointed, the sugges
tion involved in the query is season
able and reasonable.
REV. E. C. OGCEL.
The resignation by the Rev. E. C.
Oggel of the pastorate of the Bethel
Union Church will probably be as
great a surprise to most of our
readers as it lias been to us. Mr.
Oggcl has labored in this city, in
the cause of Christianity, for a
period of nearly three years, and
has established n reputation as an
earnest, zealous, untiring worker,
both in tho pulpit and out of it. By
his own people he is esteemed and
loved, and is highly respected by
all classes of every shade of religious
belief in tho community. The news
of his resignation will, therefore, be
received with general regret. It is
pleasing, however, to learn that this
step on tho part of Mr. Oggcl is not
the result of nny dissatisfaction
whatever, either on the side of the
pastor or his Hock ; but has been in
duced solely by the contemplated
consolidation of the Bethel and Fort
street congregations. Being pastor
of ono only of the churches desiring
consolidation, Mr. Oggcl simply in
sists upon stepping aside so not to
bo in nny possible way an impedi
ment to the union. It would bo a
misfortune for the community to
loso tho services of tho Reverend
gentleman, and when we, for our
eolvcs, express the fervent hopo that
arrangements may ultimately bo
made by which ho shall be retained,
we also titter the sentiment of all
who know him nnd respect the causo
whose advocacy is his life work.

THE COLLECTOR-GENERALSHIP.
Tho appointment of Hon. A. S.
Cleghorn to tho Collector-Generalship
of Custorn3, announced in this
paper on Saturday last, is ono which
cannot fail to meet with general ap
proval, nnd for which the appoint
ing power has the public thanks.
Tho ofllce is of tho highest import
ance, nnd calls for n mnn of intelli
gence, character, and activity. It
is no sinecure. With an nblo
Deputy, which fortunately tho de
partment lias, and a competent and
conscientious Chief, confidence wll
be restored. Aside from the char
acter of the 'new incumbent, and
tho qualification of a commercial
training and commercial experi
ence, he is an old resident, is allied
to the Royal Family, and has long
been practically and enthusiastically
identified with some of our best
public institutions, giving tinio and
labor gratuitously and ungrudg
ingly all of which arc entitled to
some consideration in making ap
pointments to the public service.
Wo arc glad to see this recognition
of Sir. Clcghorn's claims, combined
with the fitness of the selection for
the responsible and important posi
tion. THE ANNUAL SHOW.
Saturday, the 14th day of the
present month, has been definitely
settled upon by the Royal Hawaiian
Agricultural Society for their annual
show just twelve days from to
day. Saturday, of all days in tho
week, is undoubtedly the most con
venient for the greatest number of
people, and will probably bring to
gether a larger concourse of visitors
than could be collected any other
day. It is a sliott day witli most
business houses and all the large in
stitutions that employ mechanics and
laborers. The Government nursery,
where the show is to be held, is not
far from the city proper, and a visit
after the week's toil will afford re
laxation and recreation. In this
connection, wc would suggest that
an extension of the closing time to G
o'clock, would be in the interest of
working men and their families. The
days arc lengthening out, and it is
broad daylight considerably nfter
C o'clock. With regard to exhibits,
it is to be hoped that all who possess
articles within the comprehensive
range of the Society's published
catalogue, will be sulllcicntly in
terested to bring them forward for
the occasion, and in this way make
the show a varied and creditable
one. The Society lias done its best,
and lias arranged a list which lakes
in every variety of product laised in
the country. It now rests with the
people to do their part, and be on
hand with their exhibits. If all, or
any considerable portion, of those
who are in position to contribute,
will only get up a little enthusiasm
among themselves, there is no reason
why the shew should not be more
varied and complete than any
previous one ; nnd if the exhibition
is thus mado attractive, there will
bo no difficulty in inducing the pub
lic to go and sec it.
UNACCEPTABLE PRAYERS.
I do not like to hear him pray,
On bended knee about an hour,
For grace to spend aright tho day.
Who knows his neighbor has no llour.
I'd rather t-eu him go to mill,
And buy tho luckless brothei bread,
And see ids children cat their till,
And laugh beneath their humble shed.
I do not like to hear him pray,
"Let blessings on thu w Idow be,"
Who never seeks her home to say,
'If want o'crtake you, coino to me."
1 hate the prayer, so loud and long,
That's otfeicd for the orphan's weal.
By him whosces hlin crit&hc i by wrong.
And only with the llpa doth tecl.
I do not like to hejir her pray,
With jew elled ear and Mll.cu dress,
Whoso washerwoman toils all day,
And then Is asked to woik for 'less.
Such ploiib hIiuvcis I desjiUu;
With folded hands and face demure,
They lift to heaven their "angel eye,"
And steal thu earnings of the nor.
I do not like such soulless prnycis:
If wrong, I hope to bo forgiven.
Xo angel's wing them upward bears;
They're lost n million miles from
Heaven. fS. P. Bulletin.
NOTES RY THE KINAU.
When the steamer Kiiinu nrrived
at Knwaihae, Hawaii, on Wednes
day, a report was current there that
AInuna Loa had again broken out,
and the lava How had readied tho
edge of tho woods back of llilo.
Heavy columns of smoke issuing
from the summit crater of tho moun
tain, as also dense clouds of smoke
along tho Kolmln coast, seemed to
corroborate tho statement, but when
the steamer arrived in llilo it was
ascertained that tho story of mi out
break was a fabrication, as tho
people of llilo knew nothing about
an eruption, and had only noticed
hmoko in dense masses coming
from Moktifiwcowco.
Tito railroad survey is still being
pushed forward, and the peoplo of
llilo arc already thinking of their
